A great article. the concluding paragraph “Bring your ‘A’ game – so we don’t have to sit in a room and try to make excuses for why you deserve a second chance,” is key. So many emerging managers think that fundraising is about LP introductions. The most successful emerging managers follow the 95-5 rule in fundraising: spend 95% of your total fundraising effort executing on the activities on the article: align your incentives with those of your investor, get representative deals done, have an extraordinary niche investment strategy, ensure that the partners making the investment decisions are making the investments, build out excellent communications and so on. For emerging managers, aim to spend 95% of your time getting your manager into a state where LPs can say yes, and once its ready you should not need to spend more than 5% on LP introductions. If you really hit the ball out of the park, LPs may come to you.

This is valuable stuff for anyone looking to get a fund raised as a first-timer in private markets... and for LPs wanting to back managers with little or no track record. This is especially relevant for those in the diverse-led manager space, where investors are looking to the next generation of emerging GPs to shift the makeup of institutional investment landscape. BCG + Cambridge Associates: "Our analysis of more than 84,000 US-based deals completed by private equity and venture capital firms found that: Diverse private equity and venture capital firms invest in a different universe of deals from that of nondiverse firms. In our analysis, approximately 30% of transactions completed exclusively by diverse-owned firms are not accessed by nondiverse firms.
