Do you know what #Paralympics stands for? I can tell you it 100% is NOT a shortened term for "paraplegic" Olympics. It derives from the Greek preposition “para” (beside or alongside), in other words a parallel #Olympics for people with disabilities. So why the break between the Olympics and the Paralympics?... Why not run it all at once? Fundamentally, it takes a significant amount of logistics to bump out Olympic athletes from 329 events in 32 sports from the village only for Paralympic athletes competing in a staggering 549 events in 22 sports to arrive and get setup! We're only at half time. Let the Games begin! #ImagineWhatWeCanDo

Firstly, the Paralympic Games should be hosted before the Olympic Games. Secondly, why are we not talking about how strong the Indian Paralympic contingent is, they are making medals rain for us! Thirdly, how are these human beings so incredible? 😭 #paralympics2024 #teamIndia #proudindian

“The Magic of the Paralympics: Perseverance and Inspiration” The Paralympics are special for several reasons and since I was gifted with living with a paraplegic at an early age, it became a must see on my sports calendar. For full context please read earlier post: ’The Rare Gift of Living with a Paraplegic’. Here are just a few reasons why you might want to watch too: 1. Showcase of Human Resilience: The games highlight the extraordinary achievements of athletes who overcome physical and sometimes severe disabilities. They demonstrate the indomitable will and spirit of the human condition. 2. Promoting Inclusion: The Paralympics play a crucial role in promoting inclusivity and changing perceptions about disability. They offer a platform to challenge stereotypes and advocate for equal opportunities. 3. High Level of Competition: Athletes at the Paralympics compete at incredibly high levels, often breaking records and setting new standards in their sports, just like in the Olympics. 4. Innovation and Adaptation: The sports are often adapted to fit the needs of the athletes, showcasing innovative equipment and modifications that make the sports accessible to those with disabilities. As a P.Ed student since the Paralympics started, this has always been my question: Why are we not creating the same hype as the Olympics? Why aren’t we celebrating our Indian Paralympic champions enough? While the Paralympic Games showcase incredible talent, determination, and resilience, the achievements of our Indian Paralympians often go unnoticed. Athletes like Devendra Jhajharia, Mariyappan Thangavelu, and Avani Lekhara have brought immense pride to the nation with their world-class performances. Yet, they rarely receive the recognition they deserve in mainstream media. Why is this the case? Maybe it’s due to the media’s overwhelming focus on popular sports, or societal perceptions that undervalue the accomplishments of athletes with disabilities. But these athletes, who break barriers and push human limits, deserve our attention, respect, and celebration. Let’s change the narrative. Let’s honour their dedication and shine a brighter light on their victories. Transport - Olympic & Paralympic Games. Planing transportation for any Olympic & Paralympic Games is tough. A ton of moving parts that all have to be in sync for the transport plan to succeed. As the City of Los Angeles gears up for the LA28 Olympic & Paralympic a Summer Games, it's imperative that the United States government lends its support to ensure seamless transport planning and operations. Unless we have broadcasters, we wont have enough viewers, unless we have viewers, we wont have enough para sports followers, unless have enough para sports followers, we wont have enough para sport lover, unless we have para sports lover, we wont have the potential growth in the Paralympic Movement. it is likely that a country with a large population and a strong sporting culture will have the highest overall sports viewership, thus countries like India, China, US, with a high percentage of sports viewership, can play a major role in creating the awareness and building interest for Paralympic sports. Additionally, IPC must put measures so that specialized subjects like classification could be made understandable to everyone watching the sport.
