🌟 CIPD Scotland Annual Conference 2024: A Journey of Insights 🌟
As the conference curtains fell, I find myself reflecting on the rich tapestry of knowledge woven during these transformative days. Here is my key takeaway on the role of the people profession in developing future-facing workforces and workplaces
Peter Cheese, the Chief Executive of CIPD, delivered an inspiring keynote highlighting the pivotal role of the people profession in shaping the future of work. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing employee wellbeing, driving inclusion as a business necessity, and leveraging AI to create better jobs. He stressed the significance of training and supporting line managers and advocated for recruiting based on attitude and training for skills. He also underscored the importance of understanding and collaborating with trade unions. In the face of global challenges such as globalization, political change, social and demographic shifts, technological advancements, and various crises including environmental, economic, pandemic, and geopolitical, Peter affirmed that HR professionals are crucial in shaping the future of work.
Additionally, he addressed challenges like poor productivity growth, industrial relations, inflation and pay pressures, well-being, stress, long-term sickness, job vacancies & skill shortages, the future of inclusion and diversity, post-Brexit regulation, short-term, and lack of investment, as well as policy and regulatory changes within the HR context. He also discussed the implications of AI for HR, highlighting its potential to reduce administrative workload, improve productivity, transform learning and development, aid in policy development, enhance data analysis and insights, and shift focus on value-adding and strategic activities.
Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of inclusion as a business imperative within HR practices, highlighting its role in providing access to diverse skills and talent, driving innovation and creativity, fostering a sense of belonging within communities, and ensuring that HR professionals represent the customers they serve.
Moreover, he underscored the significance of professionalism and accountability within HR. This includes upholding social and ethical standards, possessing a robust body of knowledge and skills, demonstrating sound judgment in complex situations, and exhibiting confidence and commitment in HR practices. He emphasized the importance of continuous professional development (CPD) in maintaining HR professionals' competence and identity within the field.
By embodying these principles of professionalism and accountability, people professionals can uphold the integrity of HR practices and contribute to the sustainable development of organizations and communities.
