Wrapping up Fred Hutch's Science Education Partnership Summer Session with poster presentations and an open house! For the past three weeks, high school teachers from across Washington State have been at our Seattle campus learning molecular biology skills with colleagues, working alongside scientist-mentors in their labs and developing a curriculum project to share their experiences with their students. After completing the Summer Session, teachers have access to SEP's Kit Loan Program, including complete lesson plans and all the biotechnology equipment, reagents and supplies needed to turn their classrooms into labs. Technical and scientific support is also readily available from program staff and scientists at the Hutch. 🍏🔬 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gWeuu3v4

Here's more evidence of changing post-PhD career paths, this time for graduates of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. More recent cohorts were less likely to go into PI roles, and more likely to go into other academic roles, industry research, non-research, and even non-science roles. While in this particular example the majority of graduates stayed in academia, it's a pretty reasonable assumption that academia will be the minority outcome for EMBL graduates soon. I am so happy these five students, who conducted research with me, either as participants of my NSF SMRP or my M-PURE program, were all granted “Highest Honors/Honors” one week before graduation. Three of the five students presented their senior investigative projects (SIPs) on research they completed in the Chemistry Program in the Department of Natural and Behavior Sciences. One of the five students was granted Highest Honors in both Chemistry and Biology. Two National Science Foundation grants supported all research, the HBCU Research Initiative Award (RIA), and the HBCU Target Infusion Project(TIP). #chemistry, #STEM, #research, #jcsu

Thanks Thomas G. Sors, PhD for having me on Pathfinder! I really enjoyed this conversation and I hope that it can help someone else who is facing a similar decision. This mirrors a lot of my thoughts shared in my article on my transition from my Chemistry PhD to business development: https://lnkd.in/gE5NPYzq .
On this NEW EPISODE of Pathfinder we talk to Marissa A. Jones, PhD Jones who is a Business Development Manager at biocrates life sciences ag, where she connects researchers with metabolomics solutions. She earned her PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Vanderbilt University, studying under Dr. Richard Caprioli, who is known for his contributions to imaging mass spectrometry. Transitioning from academia to business development, Dr. Jones leverages her training as a PhD analytical chemist to guide researchers to the best technology for their needs. She has published in prestigious journals such as Analytical Chemistry and the Journal of Experimental Medicine. As a former National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship awardee and Womix Mentorship Award nominee, Dr. Jones is dedicated to advancing the field of mass spectrometry and supporting future generations of scientists. #pathfinder #purdueuniversity #pi4d #careers #lifesciences 👇CLICK HERE👇 https://lnkd.in/gQAj282H
