Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, is a federal holiday that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, it took more than two years for the news to reach Texas, which was still under Confederate control during the Civil War! As we celebrate Independence Day, we are reminded that, while still far from perfect, our country has always evolved to meet the needs of an ever-changing world. We have an opportunity to continue this evolution and work together to build a thriving, resilient, pro-equity democracy that effectively meets the needs of a politically, racially, and religiously diverse America. We are pleased to host this annual event and excited to be adding a reading of the Freedom Petition co-authored by Prince Whipple. The inclusion of Prince Whipple and the Freedom Petition is very much in keeping with the theme of independence; and invites us to recognize that our journey as a nation is long, and full of triumphs and short-comings, enlightenment and contradiction. Democracy is an ideal that requires ongoing care, practice, and tending; and the two stories shared together is an energizing reminder of that. https://lnkd.in/eUig2UGc

Today, many people in the United States are celebrating this country's independence from monarchy. And yet we are not free. Not free from racism. Not free from patriarchy. Not free from warmongers. Not free from corporate greed. Not free from income inequality. Not free from exploitation. Not free from microplastics. Not free from police brutality. Not free from the prison-industrial complex. Not free from media companies that fan the flames of division so they can monetize our anger and fear. Not free from elected representatives who represent themselves more than the electorate. Not free from special interest groups, both here and abroad, that are actively subverting the foundational principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence, Constitution of the United States, and Bill of Rights. If we can ever achieve our independence from all those forces, not just a silly king, it will truly be a day of celebration. 🫶
