I have to say that Peter Apps' coverage of the many and varied issues brought to light by the Grenfell Inquiry has always been a worthwhile read. If you work in construction or building management you could do worse than take 15 mins to read this substack article and keep an eye out for the 2 following.

From Design Vision to London Landmark: The Blackfriars CSO Story The site support team and I are often behind the scenes, but the Blackfriars Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) project in London has thrust us into the spotlight. This wasn't just any project; it was a complex engineering feat that pushed boundaries and defied expectations. Design Vision: Imagine an underground labyrinth of interconnected tunnels and chambers, spanning the River Thames, designed to prevent raw sewage from polluting the iconic waterway. That's Blackfriars CSO. But bringing this vision to life wasn't a solo act. Hundreds of talented individuals poured their expertise into every facet of this project. Structural engineers wrestled with unique geotechnical challenges, tunnel and geotechnical engineers crafted solutions to minimise disruption, and construction crews braved the depths of the Thames, always putting safety first. And then there were the unforeseen obstacles. Navigating that unexpected hurdle, alongside the FLo site teams, demanded quick thinking, close collaboration, and a healthy dose of ingenuity. Together, we re-jigged the design, adjusted construction sequencing, and ensured the project stayed on track. It was a masterclass in adaptability, a testament to the strength of a team pulling in the same direction. The Blackfriars CSO stands as a beacon of sustainability and innovation, but it's also a monument to the collective effort of hundreds of passionate individuals. This project wasn't just about building a structure; it was about building a team, forging relationships, and learning from each other. It's a lesson I'll carry with me throughout my career, a reminder that the greatest achievements are born from collaboration, resilience, and a shared sense of purpose. An interesting find in the historical documents showing the original surveyed route 1872-3 that crossed the Georgia Strait (Salish Sea) just North of Campbell River... of course World Wars prevented the construction of those pieces. As far as I'm aware the designated ROW still exists to CR as I had someone that lives along it mention it's beside their properly line. Let's protect what we have, and perhaps in the future it could be built upon. https://chng.it/HTPJ25CqPr

Top-down building construction using the Liftbuild system in Chicago - I spend a lot of time thinking about how we can make construction safer: can we develop a solution that reduces the number of large crane lifts, or can we minimise works within deep excavations or confined spaces, or can we manufacture precast offsite rather than stick-building? Considering high-rise construction, my initial thoughts are “you could never build a high-rise without a tower crane”. Turns out I was wrong! The Exchange tower is a 16 storey building which is being built top-down using the new LIFTbuild system. Each floor is built on ground, and lifted into place. It significantly reduces the fall hazards and work required around suspended loads, and makes it possible to build a high-rise mostly from ground level. Could this be something we see more of in the high-rise construction industry, or perhaps even in other applications? #safety #engineering #safetyinconstruction https://lnkd.in/geKk-2FY
