[SAVE THE DATE: launch of a new handbook!] 🚯 80% of marine waste comes from land-based activities, representing a flow of 1 million tonnes per year, which is likely to triple over the next 20 years 🚯 In March 2022, the UN Environment Programme adopted a resolution to negotiate a global treaty to combat plastic pollution by the end of 2024 ▶ The International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO/RIOB) and its partners, the Partenariat français pour les déchets / French Solid Waste Partnership, the ISWA International Solid Waste Association and the AFD - Agence Française de Développement, have worked together to draw up the Handbook on the Transfer of waste and plastics in aquatic environments, with the support of the Office français de la biodiversité (OFB). 📆 Launched and Presented for the 10th World Water Forum in Bali (from 20th to 25th May) ! 💧 The aim is to raise awareness and inform those involved in the protection of aquatic ecosystems and waste management, as well as those less familiar with the issue, that together they can make informed decisions and take concrete action. 🌎𝙅𝙪𝙣𝙚 𝟴𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙨 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙊𝙘𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙨 𝘿𝙖𝙮 🏝️🐬 Today is World Oceans Day. The Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (#PALM10) will be held in Japan this summer, and the marine environment is one of the key themes. JICA is promoting activities to preserve clean islands and rich seas. For “Small Island Developing States (SIDS)”, the proper management of waste generated by people's daily lives directly contributes to the reduction of marine plastic litter. JICA has been improving solid waste management in the Pacific island countries for more than 20 years and has trained more than 100 waste management leaders. The leaders take initiative in collecting and transporting the waste, and properly managing the final waste disposal sites adjacent to the ocean. They prevent the discharge of waste into the ocean, the degradation of coastal water quality, and contribute to the conservation of coastal ecosystems such as coral reefs and mangroves. #WorldOceansDay #marineplasticlitter #EnvironmentalConservation #coralreefs #mangroves

This image raises some critical questions. Is it accurate? Possibly, but let’s think about it for a moment. The fact that there is even a diagram showing plastic waste contributions to the environment is eye-opening for me. Perhaps I haven’t fully appreciated the extent of Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs) in the past. I always assumed that countries like China, India, or the U.S. would dominate in these estimations. Yet, here we are, with Myanmar ranked among the world’s top ocean plastic waste polluters. This is both surprising and concerning. We need a reality check. As part of ongoing efforts to address the critical issue of water pollution in Asia, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has published two important documents: "Clean Water and the Business and Human Rights Agenda: A Case Study of the Citarum River Basin in Indonesia" and "Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence in Asia: A Clean Water Self-Assessment." Co-authored by me and Sean Lees, these publications offer insights and practical tools for businesses to prevent and mitigate water pollution and respect human rights. The global water crisis remains a pressing challenge, with 844 million people worldwide lacking access to clean water, including 110 million in Southeast Asia. The first report focuses on the Citarum River Basin in Indonesia. Once one of the world's most polluted rivers, the Citarum River has seen significant improvements in water quality thanks to coordinated cleanup efforts. This case study highlights the severe human rights impacts of past water pollution and the ongoing importance of maintaining water quality to protect the rights of millions who depend on the river for their daily needs. The second document, a self-assessment tool, provides a framework for businesses to conduct due diligence on water pollution, guided by the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). This tool helps businesses identify, assess, and address potential adverse impacts, promoting better water stewardship and waste management practices. These resources underscore the importance of integrating human rights considerations into environmental management. By adopting the recommendations and frameworks provided, businesses can enhance their operational sustainability and contribute positively to the communities they impact. The documents were launched on May 23, 2024, at the World Water Forum in Bali. This proactive approach to reducing pollution and promoting cleanliness highlights a growing awareness and dedication to tackling environmental issues, even among those who may not have prioritized them in the past. Based on an IUCN study, the country also contributes about 35% of the plastic pollution leaking into the marine environment in southern and east Africa. 🗑 We're taking a stand against waste pollution with our Environmental Pollution Programme. Through community-led efforts, we're making strides in mitigating waste pollution in South Africa. 🔍 Partnering with the Institute of Natural Resources NPC, we're empowering communities in South Africa to develop sustainable solutions for waste disposal and repurposing. 🤝 Mobilising communities: Workshops across three case study areas have enhanced understanding of current waste disposal practices and pinpointed illegal dumping sites. 📊 With support from citizen scientists, a waste audit of illegal dumping sites has revealed plastic waste and disposable nappy waste as the most common types of waste dumped within communities. 🌿 These insights will guide us in co-developing effective waste management strategies, while recognising the potential value of waste in supporting economic growth, as well as launching an awareness campaign for positive change. 🌐 Stay tuned for more updates as we work together for a pollution free future for nature, climate and people.
