Our conversation delved into the exciting possibilities of collaboration between Dutch and Moroccan educational ecosystems. 📚 A Call to Transform Education for a Better Future 📚 At the recent UNESCO event, UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed highlighted the urgent need to address the ongoing education crisis. Despite significant efforts, high-quality, relevant education remains out of reach for millions, particularly women, girls, vulnerable children, and those affected by conflict and humanitarian crises. Key Insights: 🔹 Global Education Crisis: Education is at the top of the global agenda, but we are far from where we need to be. 🇵🇸 The children of Gaza, for instance, are enduring unimaginable suffering, underscoring the need for immediate action 🇵🇸 🔹 Creating Learning Societies:In an era of rising polarization, AI, and digital transitions, we must reimagine education delivery and lifelong learning. New technologies should enhance the educational experience, and teachers must be supported as knowledge producers and guides. 🔹 Investment in Education: Education is an investment in nation-building, not just an expenditure. There must be a dramatic increase in education investment, requiring changes to the international financial system to provide developing countries with greater access to low-cost, long-term financing. Calls to Action: ➡️ Innovative Approaches: We need to rethink who has access to education and how it is delivered. The deployment of new technologies and digital connectivity should be prioritized.    ➡️ Support for Teachers: Teachers need the conditions and support to facilitate complex learning. This aligns with the Secretary General's call for a focus on teaching professions at upcoming global summits. ➡️ Increased Investment: A shift in the international financial system is crucial to ensure sustainable social investments. This includes expanding domestic tax bases and prioritizing education within national budgets. Future Steps: The upcoming global summits, including the Summit of the Future, G20 meetings, and the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, are opportunities to champion these changes. Education is the glue that will hold our societies together through unprecedented challenges. Young Africans will make up one in ten of the world's entire population by 2050. The importance of ensuring that they have the right education, the right skills and the right opportunities in a knowledge-led, innovation-based society, to ensure not just prosperity but of course citizenship and peace across the continent, can not be overstated. It was an enormous privilege to help formally open the inaugural Times Higher Education Pan-Africa Universities Summit, in Pretoria, co-hosted by University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University and to set the scene for an inspiring two days (pictured) in the outstanding Future Africa UP campus. THE has revealed some fantastic examples of African universities outshining the global north to provide outstanding world leadership on social and economic impact - with over 100 African universities shining out in the THE Impact Rankings, for example. There is great momentum and dynamism across the continent - and over 300 senior university leaders from 32 countries joined us to explore Africa's future at the summit. But let’s be clear – this exciting dynamism, this great progress in higher education and research that we are witnessing, must not be allowed to falter. Continued momentum – and indeed acceleration, is absolutely vital. It is vital for the future health of the African continent and for the realisation of Agenda 2063. See key insights below, or watch the recording by going to the membership area on the AIB World website: https://lnkd.in/gS4fg5bJ   Why Africa is an exciting research setting: · Africa represents a rich, complex, and diverse context for research, offering both unique opportunities and specific challenges. · The continent's complexities require researchers to be open-minded and innovative with respect to their methodologies. · There is a need for more research that specifically theorizes about phenomena unique to African management practices, thus addressing gaps in the literature. Researchers should be bold with respect to challenging existing theories and contributing new insights, based on observations in the African context. Getting started with your research in Africa: · Researchers, especially women, are encouraged to believe in their voice and the value of their contributions, despite systemic challenges or cultural norms that may discourage them. · Early-career researchers can really benefit from mentorship, especially in learning how to navigate the publication process and theorize from African perspectives. Collaboration, both within Africa and internationally, is crucial for enriching research and overcoming resource limitations. · Early-career academics are advised to identify their research interests early on, participate in developmental workshops, and seek mentorship. Non-African researchers looking to study the continent are advised to collaborate with local academics, respect cultural nuances, and understand the importance of conducting fieldwork within Africa to gain authentic insights. Challenges of doing research in Africa: · Researchers may face logistical challenges, such as arranging interviews and navigating local systems. · Language barriers, ethnocentrism, and gender dynamics can also present obstacles to effective research. · Funding for research is often scarce, requiring personal investment or creative sourcing of funds. Overcoming the challenges of doing research in Africa: · Success in African research often hinges on local collaborations and understanding cultural nuances. · Being physically present in Africa and immersing oneself in the local context can greatly enhance the quality of the research. · Conviction in one's research interest and a willingness to navigate the complexities of the African context are essential for producing impactful work. I might be a bit late to the party, but as they say, better late than never! I am thrilled to join the AESP Program Cohort 2. First and foremost, I would like to thank God, and secondly, the African Economic Scholars Program (AESP) team for making this opportunity possible. Being selected from over 500 applicants to be one of the lucky 50 is no small feat, so thank you for believing in me. One week in, and it has already been a whirlwind of emotions—ranging from adrenaline-fueled excitement to sheer exhaustion. The common thread? Unbridled enthusiasm. Saying I have learnt a lot would be an understatement. Collaborating with my team (Team 5) to write my first-ever policy program proposal was more challenging than I anticipated. We researched, brainstormed, spitballed ideas, and 4 google meets and hundreds of WhatsApp texts later we drafted a final report, which we then presented. (It was a stellar presentation, if I may say so!) Our learning journey didn’t stop there. During orientation, we had the honor of hearing from Hugue Nkoutchou, who provided invaluable insights on what makes a good policy and why policies in Africa are rarely implemented. He emphasized that a good policy should be evidence-informed, targeted, affordable, sustainable, and pro-competitive. One significant issue facing policymaking in our continent is the lack of research, which hinders closing the data gap. Many policies are based on "common sense" rather than solid evidence. To address this, African countries need to invest more in research to make informed decisions. Currently, Africa contributes a mere 1% of the world's global research output and averages only 0.4% of its GDP on research and development ( as cited from https://lnkd.in/dqQ-34FV) Clearly, more needs to be done to increase funding for research in Africa and to support capacity-building programs like AESP for young African researchers. Once again, thank you, AESP, for being part of the solution.
