“Humanity risks catastrophic global heating if it focuses only on decarbonisation at the expense of restoring the natural world” A recent article by Patrick Greenfield shares how Susana Muhamad, Colombia’s Environment Minister and upcoming President of the UN Biodiversity COP16 in October, is calling for greater political support to make “the global biodiversity framework as politically relevant as the climate agenda”. Biodiversity must be taken into account when addressing climate issues. This is especially true for blue carbon ecosystems, which are biodiversity havens comprised of unique land and seascapes. The Blue Carbon Action Partnership team is working to bring together national and regional governments, corporates, and civil society to develop a roadmap for high-quality blue carbon projects within their country, alongside pathways to finance such efforts. 🌿 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gjs5avmD 💡 Discover more about the Blue Carbon Action Partnership here: https://lnkd.in/e5YPrpB9 Emily Kelly James Tops Jason Carter Ting Peng #BlueCarbon #Biodiversity #COP16

There are two kinds of COPs in the UN world. Not good cop and bad cop (though some might argue that is a good way to describe them), but rather climate COPs and biodiversity COPs. "COP" itself refers to "Conference of the Parties," which is UN-speak for a convening of the signatory states to a particular convention, and the biodiversity and climate conventions are the two that address the future of a sustainable planet. The climate COP takes place annually and is the more renowned — the 29th climate COP will take place later this year in Azerbaijan. But also extremely important is the biodiversity COP — the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) — which meets every two years, and which specifically addresses life on the planet. That one is meeting now in Cali, Colombia. The Cali COP, or COP16, will be one of the most important meetings of the group yet, as, per the Guardian, "governments are expected to present national strategies on how they plan to meet the targets known as National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs)." As highlighted through a Joint Statement of the Presidents of UNFCCC COP27, CBD COP15, and UNCCD COP15 published in November 2023, “there is no pathway to achieving our goals on climate, biodiversity or land without tackling them together”.
