𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 “𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝟓𝟎 𝐋𝐨𝐛𝐛𝐲𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬". 🎉 Capalino has one again appeared in City & State's annual “New York City Top 50 Lobbyists,” highlighting the leading government relations firms across the five boroughs. 👏 𝐁𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Civic Hall at Union Square: When RAL was awarded the RFP to develop a tech training center on 14th Street and Irving Place, Capalino helped shepherd the project through the public review process and develop the structure for a community advisory board with local stakeholders. Another achievement is helping to elevate with policymakers the issue of the backlog of child care background checks and draft legislation to ameliorate it. With demand for child care growing, these delays hinder providers’ ability to recruit and retain staff and provide high-quality programs for families across the city. What an invigorating morning it was at the #Edcon conference! Our team had the honor of joining forces with the insightful Brett Waller and the dedicated members of the Seattle Police Department for a panel discussion on a cause dear to us all: Community Safety. In our conversation, we delved into ways to enhance the safety of our residential communities. We discussed a range of strategies, brought our collective knowledge to the table, and concentrated on the newest methods, technologies, and resources. Our aim was to bolster neighborhood safety, working hand in hand with community partners and leveraging available resources. However, this is merely the beginning of a much larger conversation. We believe in the power of community and collective wisdom. So, we're curious: What are your best tips for fostering safety in multifamily communities? Share your strategies and experiences below. Let’s continue the dialogue and together, create safer, more secure neighborhoods. #CommunitySafety #SafetyFirst #multifamily Washington Multi-Family Housing Association

Let’s start a conversation! Last week, Allison Farole, MPA, CEM, MiPEM and I discussed the concept of building community preparedness. In this, we shared an observation that our current culture has shifted away from prioritizing and fostering a sense of “community.” Modern-day society coupled with technology advancements have shifted our mind-set. We are less connected to our neighbors, colleagues, schools, towns, city-centers, etc., than at any other time in history. And our long-standing viewpoint/sense of what “community” is, no longer exists. So, the QOTD is this: How do you build community preparedness, without community being a part of your culture?

The “one-mile-radius” effect is a positive wave of impact that builds momentum neighborhood by neighborhood. As neighborhoods become hubs of community more partners enter that community and other neighborhoods begin to enter a period of revitalization, eventually creating a stronger, healthier community at a city’s core. Learn more about the one-mile-radius principle in my latest blog.

So often we hear conversations about “density” and adding density. To me, the biggest challenge is applying these ideas to areas outside of urban cores. I sat next to a gentleman this weekend who made the point of “proximity” and how proximity is really the driver for blending this conversation between urban/suburb/rural. The “one-mile-radius” is a great example of this proximity and how ALL communities can think about proximity and how we crave it. That proximity will be different from the urban core vs Main Street USA, but it is important recognize that these proximities exist in all type of communities.

Our team is working on pulling together a high-value (low to no cost) webinar series focusing on "Community Building." When Nate Geinzer left his City Manager role nearly two years ago and determined to focus on consulting, three experiences drove the direction he would take Double Haul Solutions and his interest in community building: 1) Working on community building efforts in the City of Port Huron's Southside/South Park Neighborhood 2) Participating in the 2022 Community Builders Camp hosted by Doug Griffiths, MBA, of 13 Ways Inc. and 3) Teaching a great group of Masters of Public Administration Students at Oakland University. Because Nate is wired to collaborate, we wanted to create an opportunity for our followers and networks to help shape this emerging content. Our goal will be to have sessions build on one another, leaving participants not only inspired, but equipped with actionable strategies. Working titles/topics currently being considered/assembled include: ▶ What is Community Building: A Conversation ▶ Building Community in Less than Civil Conditions ▶ Embracing and Leveraging Diversity to Build Community ▶ Youth Engagement: A Mistake to Overlook ▶ Leveraging Neighborhoods to Build Community ▶ Building Organizational Capacity: Operationalizing Community Building ▶ Sustaining Community Building Through Constructive Relationships: Identifying and Effectively Engaging Collaborators ▶ Sustaining Community Building Through Constructive Relationships: Navigating Elected/Appointed Relations ▶ Missing Pieces: Basic Civics & Community Building Although we are still working on identifying speakers for each session, we can confirm Seth Kaplan will be participating in the "Leveraging Neighborhoods" session. Coming Summer/Fall 2024. #CommunityBuilding #CapacityBuilding #PublicService #CityManager #LocalGovernment Mitchell Foster, ICMA-CM April McGrath Lynch Lori Fisher Teresa Gillotti Peter Chapman Amanda Opalewski, MPA, CQIA Henry Outlaw, MPA Torri Mathes Jenny Vainberg

Something happened to Dearborn County. We used to be the community which let our historic downtowns deteriorate. We ignored -- if not abhorred -- the Ohio River. We didn't see much value in artistic and cultural offerings. We had an aversion to working together. Whether it is the IEDC READI program or the recently relaunched OCRA Stellar Pathways program, we are often told that our communities need to go bigger, bolder, and more transformational with our investments and future planning. If you sit back and take inventory, you will realize Dearborn County is already well down this path. Have you seen East Central High School's new natatorium? The snow-making innovation at Perfect North Slopes? What about the concepts for the City of Lawrenceburg Riverwalk project? Or do we realize the milestone that is the new, state-of-the-art cancer center which St. Elizabeth Healthcare just opened in Greendale? We even have one of the most popular night clubs in the Cincinnati area at Hollywood Casino's Boogie Nights. All this right here in lil' ol' Dearborn County. What got into us? What changed our "Humble Hoosier" mentality? Some might say it is just the result of riverboat gaming or Cincinnati's urban sprawl and population growth spilling over state lines into Dearborn County. If you ask me, it came down to visionary leadership and innovators. People which we at One Dearborn have the fortune to engage with each day. We shouldn't scoff at big ideas which appear beyond our grasp. As our track record shows, with the proper buy-in and prioritization, such ideas are more achievable in Dearborn County and Southeast Indiana than we give ourselves credit for. For Dearborn County to succeed in becoming an Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs #StellarPathways designee, we'll need people of many backgrounds, ideas, and desires for our communities to be thoughtfully engaged. It's a big table. I hope you'll pull up a chair.
The Office of Indiana Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch and OCRA today announced the four finalist regions for the 2024 Stellar Pathways program.
