We are excited about the groundbreaking ceremony on June 7th of Washington County's Center for Addictions Triage and Treatment's intensive services facility in Beaverton! The project will provide 86 acutely needed treatment beds to the community. We provided civil and structural engineering for a design team led by Holst and R&H Construction as the general contractor. https://lnkd.in/gTBc-V6p Images courtesy of Holst Architecture.

Balfour Beatty US broke ground on Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas. It’s the company’s first theme park dedicated to young children. Universal executives wouldn’t confirm the project’s cost, but Frisco expects the company to invest at least $550 million to build it. Architecture firm Gensler, which has extensive experience with theme parks, has been tapped to help design the project. Read the full article on Construction Dive at https://lnkd.in/edzBH_zi. Working with Symmetry Architecture Ltd we have secured full planning permission for the demolition of a heritage asset, positioned in the GREEN BELT and a CONSERVATION AREA, and the erection of a detached dwelling. Prior to Darryl Howells involvement, Symmetry Architecture Ltd undertook pre-application advice with the Local Planning Authority regarding the scheme and was told, NO complete redevelopment of the site would be supported. DHPC was recommended by the architect. We created a strategy to gain 2no. permissions before applying for the main event. 1st application needed to remove a condition restricting the use of the land; then the 2nd application for the construction of a retaining wall. Once those 2 applications were approved (quickly I might add) we applied for the main application. Darryl Howells Planning Consultancy Ltd. used the drawings of Symmetry Architecture Ltd to argue that the condition of the building was unsound, and that the proposed dwelling would not prejudice the openness of the Green Belt. We successfully argued that the design of the replacement building would not harm distance views into the conservation area, or affect the setting of nearby listed buildings. The scheme was approved under delegated powers, after most of the villagers supported the scheme and its design. Another great win for our firm. #dhpc #darrylhowells #darrylhowellsplanningconsultancy #symmetryarchitecture #theimpossible #planningpermission #greenbelt

Looking forward to assisting with Temporary Works on this phase of the project especially the cantilever structure #temporaryworks #structuralengineering #civilengineering #steelwork #modernarchitecture
We are delighted to announce that work will shortly get underway on the new atrium at the rear of Old College in Aberystwyth. Extending over seven floors and providing access to all levels of the existing building, the atrium will unlock the vast potential of the Old College for the first time. It will also feature a cantilevered new glass fronted 200-seater function room offering stunning views over Cardigan Bay. Today it was our architect friends' turn to present an interesting topic: hostile architecture. The term "defensive architecture" or "defensive urbanism" describes the planning of public areas or urban features with the intention of discouraging or prohibiting specific undesirable activities, like drug use, vandalism, begging, and providing shelter for the homeless, among other things. Creating uncomfortable public benches or adding armrests to keep people from lying down are a few instances of hostile architecture. - The placement of spikes or spike installations in areas where the homeless may seek safety. - Installing blue LED lighting in public restrooms to deter drug injection. - Scaring away homeless individuals with water sprinklers or loud noises. Despite its attempts to address social issues, hostile architecture is frequently contested since it is thought to further criminalise and isolate the most disadvantaged populations. Some detractors contend that this architecture just moves the problems to other locations without addressing the root causes. What are your thoughts about it? #architecture #architecturehostil #ingeniería #letsconnect #sismo #design #earthquake #planos #structures #civilengineering #engineering #HSEQ #bridge #OSHA #technology #buildings #construction #creativity

#Hacker40 | 2021: Revitalizing a Brutalist public library into a humane 21st Century community hub In 2017, Salem's residents voted in favor of preserving their massive concrete public library and modernizing it for 21st-century needs. Structures from this era are reaching a point where revitalization is essential, yet communities often find themselves constrained by budgets that primarily cover earthquake safety, the replacement of outdated equipment, and repairs to address issues like leaky roofs and windows. The transformation was focused on areas that significantly shape the public experience and enhance the library's functionality for staff, ensuring the library's cherished status for another 75 years. Despite working within tight financial constraints, every dollar was meticulously allocated, with a primary focus on introducing natural light into the heart of the once fortress-like structure. The outcome is a bright, open space that now warmly welcomes the community, effectively turning the inward-facing, brutalist-era building into a vibrant hub nearly half a century after its initial opening. BK/MB seamlessly spearheaded the engineering endeavours for the revolutionary Grafton Community Centre, now transformed into the dynamic space known as Headspace. Their expertise resonated through every facet, from the foundational intricacies of slabs and footings to the innovative employment of tilt-up concrete panels. The main auditorium stood as a testament to their ingenuity, where curved structural steel frames converged. Meanwhile, the rest of the Centre stood tall with steel structural frames, a hallmark of their meticulous planning. Not limited to the built environment, BK/MB's influence extended to the civil engineering realm, etching their names in every cornerstone of this remarkable project. "This project is an exemplar in engineering tenacity and thoroughness. The team had to deal with real complexity to try and arrive at the lowest intervention solution." - Structural Awards Judges’ comments 2023 Ahead of tonight’s awards ceremony, I am delighted our team has been shortlisted in the prestigious #StructuralAwards for our work on 9 Millbank for Berkeley Group Plc. For me, this project really demonstrates the difference structural engineers can make in reducing our impact on the environment. 🌍 As well as the full refurbishment of 9 Millbank (formerly Imperial Chemical House), part of the project featured an existing office building to be demolished - Ergon House - dating back to the late 1980s. This was built on the site of the Horseferry Road Power Station, designed by the renowned architect Sir Charles Stanley Peach (architect of Wimbledon’s Centre Court 🎾 ) dating back to 1907. When we started on the project, we were told that archive information couldn’t be found, that the entire double-storey basement would have to be demolished (even though the former power station’s foundations were likely to be excessive…) and lastly that a proposed foundation scheme would have to wait until the demolition had been completed. We found six different sets of archive information, some dating back to the early 1900s, which allowed us to justify and design an innovative foundation reuse strategy leading to savings of: 📅 10 months in programme 🏗️ 25,000 tonnes of existing concrete from demo Tonight isn’t about winning the final award; it’s about celebrating the role of the structural engineer and the industry’s best. Good luck to all the other nominees 🤞 Read more in our case study: https://lnkd.in/eD8ps-Gh Full shortlist: https://lnkd.in/egqinpHK Berkeley Group Plc Walsh - Structural, Civil & Geotechnical Engineers Foundation Developments Ltd Ian Welsh Ben Ransom Niall Hicks Darragh Ryan David McGowan Richard Ball Madeleine Groves #Lowcarbon #Repurposing #Reuse #RUFUS #StructuralAwards
