We’re excited to share that our honeybees are producing nectar! 🐝🍯 Did you know that cities are famous for something called “pocket flows” 🌸 when it comes to nectar availability and honey production? In typical agricultural settings, when the crop is done blooming the nectar flow is over and it becomes the time of the year known as the “dearth”. This is when there are no florals blooming and bees start looking for synthetic sugary substances because they’re hungry. However, compared to traditional agricultural settings, more urban environments have something called a “pocket flow”. That means while traditional plants have completed their bloom periods, depending on what companies, cities, individuals, and neighborhoods plant around their properties to keep beautiful florals blooming throughout the year, sometimes, there’s enough density to produce a nectar flow at a time of year when their shouldn’t be one. It’s one of the reasons why bees have the ability to thrive in urban environments—there are more nectar flows and diversity if bloom for longer periods of time.🏙️ There’s evidence of this at our bakery in Saint Petersburg, Florida! There are plenty of great apps and guidebooks out there to help you out. So, grab your basket, hit the trails, and reconnect with the land. We believe that plant growers should receive equal recognition at RHS flower shows. Not just us, but all of the other incredible specialists and suppliers who we know have worked tirelessly over the last 12 months to help to make the show happen. With the scale of the operation, we know that some of the smaller nurseries are put off from supporting the shows because there is little to no recognition for their efforts. Mark's column for Pro Landscaper Magazine from last year is just as relevant today. The message that he shares on why the participation of more nurseries could be pivotal for the future of flower shows is more important than ever. He discusses the challenges and risks involved in cultivating plants for such high-profile events and suggests ways the RHS can incentivise nurseries to participate. This week’s #TeachingsTuesday was shared with me by Jared "Qwustenuxun" Williams from the unceded territory of Quw'utsun -- I've been connecting with Jared all week discussing the herring run starting along some of the coastal areas of Vancouver Island. The roe the herring leave behind is an important traditional food for the Coast Salish People, however the bounty has yet to arrive for community of Quw’utsun. Jared was gifted some from a friend north of Snuneymuxw, and he offered this perspective on the impact the food has on his well-being as an Indigenous person: “There is a feeling I get when I eat traditional foods, a feeling I don't get from regular food. A feeling of energy, strength, and harmony. A feeling of calmness and completeness, of a fullness that is unparalleled. My grasp of the English language fails to fully describe the feeling." He went on to share, "these eggs are gold to the people who eat traditional Salish foods...when I hold a big plate of ts'um'ush, I feel rich, so rich I give it all away, which only makes me feel richer. But then I think how little there is left, and I hear the elders say, "we were so rich." In the little coastal town where I live, eyes have been cast protectively to our shorelines. The early spring marks a time when gardeners come to collect seaweed that has washed up onto the shore, as the plant acts as a potent garden fertilizer that dramatically enriches soil quality. However, many individuals are aware that this marks a sensitive time for seaweed, as herring use the plant as an incubator for their eggs: seaweed blades are coated with thick clumps, and if time allows, will eventually hatch new herring. As such, it is important to delay the collection of seaweed to allow the incubation to conclude. Those seen collecting seaweed prematurely may experience scathing glances and sharp words from onlookers. In fact, I’ve witnessed these interactions in my own community. But it's important to remember – some individuals may be harvesting for traditional food purposes. It's important to be kind and respect their right to do so. #culturallycommitted #teachingstuesday
