The panel at our Awards Ceremony, 'How can planetary boundary research be shaped and amplified to influence policy and practice, enabling a sustainable future?', focused on exploring how the transformative power of systems-based research in planetary boundary science, which identifies potential pathways for solutions, can be leveraged to influence industry, economics, governance, and policy. Key takeaways from the panel: 👉 Scientists need to become actors outside the scientific community, specifically in the policy space, for their insights to be translated into real-world impact. This requires a two-way communication between scientists and policy makers. 👉 We need to train people in multiple stages of their career on the topic of sustainability so they can participate and learn from the latest scientific developments. 👉 What enables science to impact society is innovation and the innovation we need should be need-based, vision-driven and transformative. 👉 We need to promote the adoption of three core values along the science-innovation chain: caring, sharing, and daring Panelists: Johan Rockstrom, Director, PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research Salvatore Aricò , Chief Executive Officer, International Science Council Massamba Thioye, Project Executive of the UN Climate Change Innovation Hub, UNFCCC UN Nicole Schwab, Co-Head, Nature Positive Pillar, World Economic Forum Celine Abecassis-Moedas, Professor and Dean for Executive Education, Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics #EarthSystemScience #PlanetaryBoundaryScience #PlanetaryHealth #SciencePolicy The Villars Institute

Leading climate scientists, economists, energy experts and social scientists from Curtin University and Murdoch University, and policymakers from across Southeast Asia, came together at Curtin for the International Symposium on Addressing Weather Extremes in Southeast Asian Cities. More than 60 people across academia, government and industry attended the Symposium to focus on how to develop ‘nature-based interventions’ that address concerns over warming cities and featured keynote speaker, Professor Petra Tschakert from the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry. We thank Professor Tschakert, Professor Mark Ogden, Professor Sonia Dickinson, and Professor Gretchen Benedix, for their involvement across this event. We also extend a special thank you and congratulations to project lead and symposium chair Associate Professor Ashraf Dewan and project co-lead Associate Professor Fazlul Rabbanee for the great success of this event. #SchoolofEarthandPlanetarySciences #EarthandPlanetarySciences #EPS #CurtinUniversity #Curtin #research #symposium #event #climatechange #sustainability

Enjoying retirement, following through on creative projects. Professional focus: telling the story of discovery and innovation, improving international science communication.
In the latest Annual Report of the TUM Institute for Advanced Study, there's something for nearly anyone interested in the interplay between science and technology, on the one hand, and environment, society, and the economy. For friends of Patrick Regan, I recommend my interview with Frank Keutsch of Harvard and Jia Chen of the Technical University of Munich: "From Urban Air to Global Climate," pages 42-55.

On this National Science Day, let's take a moment to appreciate the profound impact that science has on our lives and the world we inhabit. Science isn't just a subject in textbooks or laboratories; it's a dynamic force that shapes our understanding of the universe and drives innovation in every aspect of our existence. Science empowers us to unravel the secrets of life, cure diseases, and engineer solutions to pressing global challenges like climate change, food security, and sustainable energy. Science is more than just facts and figures—it's a mindset, a way of thinking that embraces curiosity, critical thinking, and evidence-based reasoning. It encourages us to question, explore, and challenge the status quo, pushing the boundaries of what's possible and driving progress forward. Let's inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators to dream big, think boldly, and tackle the grand challenges facing humanity. Happy National Science Day! #NationalScienceDay #ScienceAppreciation #ScienceImpact #innovation #curiosity #criticalthinking #evidencebased #sustainableenergy #energysustainable #science #sciencefiction #sciencememes #scienceday #sciencesunday #stem #scienceeducation #inspirethenextgeneration #risansi #risansipumps

#WorldScienceDay Yesterday marked World Science Day 🌍, and this year's focus is on "Building Trust in Science." As a scientist, I believe that it's not just about advancing knowledge but also about strengthening public confidence in science. Trust in science is the cornerstone of informed decision-making, crucial for solving local and global challenges. To achieve this, we must foster open communication and bridge the gap between the scientific community and the public. By doing so, we can collaboratively work towards a brighter future. Science also has the power to not only advance knowledge but also to bring nations and communities together in pursuit of a more peaceful and harmonious world. Let's hope that in the near future, science will play a significant role in fostering #peace in the world. #BuildingTrustInScience #ScientistsForChange

🌟 Exciting Research Alert! 🌟 Carbon pricing works: A major meta-study on the effectiveness of carbon pricing, co-authored by Stephan Bruns, has been published in Nature Communications! 📈 Utilizing cutting-edge machine learning techniques, this comprehensive study analyzed 80 studies from a pool of 17,000 potential publications, doubling the scope of previous meta-studies. The findings are significant: introducing a carbon pricing system leads to an empirical estimate of 5 to 21 % emission reductions within the first few years, based on 17 real-world climate policies globally. 🌍 This groundbreaking research provides robust evidence supporting the effectiveness of carbon pricing as a vital tool in our fight against climate change. Authors: Niklas Döbbeling-Hildebrandt, Klaas Miersch, Tarun M. Khanna, Marion Bachelet, Stephan Bruns, Max Callaghan, Ottmar Edenhofer, Christian Flachsland, Piers Forster, Matthias Kalkuhl, Nicolas Koch, William Lamb, Nils Ohlendorf, Jan Christoph Steckel and Jan Minx Collaborating institutes: Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) gGmbH, University of Leeds, Technische Universität Berlin, The University of British Columbia, University of Kassel, Stanford University, PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research Hertie School, IZA - Institute of Labor Economics, Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg and Centre for Environmental Sciences (CMK) #ClimateChange #CarbonPricing #Sustainability #Research #NatureCommunications #MetaStudy #MachineLearning #EnvironmentalPolicy #CMK

[The Frontiers Planet Prize: Celebrates Breakthroughs in Sustainability Science] Launched in 2022 by the Frontiers Research Foundation, the Frontiers Planet Prize recognizes and awards exceptional scientists conducting transformational research to protect our earth system. Through a rigorous evaluation and voting process, an independent Jury of 100 may select a National Champion for each participating country, and from this cohort of National Champions, and after a second round of voting, 3 International Champions will each be awarded 1 million CHF. The prize focuses on addressing any one of the 9 planetary boundaries, as detailed by Professor Johan Rockström, director at the Potsdam Institute of Climate Change, and Owen Gaffney in their book and documentary, Breaking Boundaries. The Prize seeks to boost sustainability research globally by fostering national and international competition – much like the Olympics, but among scientists, universities, and countries. The aim is to identify, fund and support research that provides real solutions to the global environmental threats we face. The prize will recognize the best research published in established scientific journals within the past two years (date of acceptance, 1st November 2022 – 31st October 2024), with robust peer review and transparent publication procedures, that fulfil the criteria of the prize. The CHF 1 million prize will be awarded to each International Champion to advance the breakthrough research of the winning research group. The International Champions will be announced during the award ceremony taking place in Spring 2025, in Switzerland.
