The second of the 11 common #placemaking mistakes may be a bit challenging and controversial for some. 'Plonk' in British or Australian English (or 'Plunk' in the US) is an informal term than means "to put something down heavily and without taking care". *Plonk placemaking* means physically ‘plonking’ a potentially good idea in a space: ❌ because it worked somewhere else ❌ without engaging local people ❌ with little care or consideration ❌ with no follow up engagement or subsequent actions If money is no issue, sure, go for it! But, in most cases, placemaking budgets will be limited, and this approach is unlikely to deliver the best outcomes. It can be tokenistic and is unlikely to drive real change. The risk is delivering 'orphan' interventions that no-one cares about or is invested in. There are another 9 more common mistakes to come. Attended the Placeman premiere in Brisbane a few weeks back. The insightful discussion delved into the crucial concept of designing for people, not just cars or commerce. It underscored how solutions initially purely intended for human benefit can inadvertently give rise to a new challenge - the absence of human-centric spaces. Here are some impactful thoughts from the panelists and from the movie that has stuck with me - Consider the "loveability" of a place in tandem with its liveability. - If architecture is like music, placemaking could be compared to an improv street performance. - Spaces should be able to encourage spontaneous activities rather than merely catering to a curated set of planned events. - The concept of "The Power of 10" involves establishing ten distinct areas within an urban space, each designed for a unique set of ten activities. - Address issues creatively; swap out problems with solutions, like replacing drug use areas with coffee and ice cream spots. Kudos to the organizers of the event, the insightful panelists and engaging guests for making it a memorable discussion! #placemaking #urbandesign #urbanism
PLACEMAKING IN BRISBANE: IF THE CITY’S NOT FOR PEOPLE, WHO IS IT FOR? Rachel Gallagher says that placemaking describes interventions that reimagine or redesign spaces for people. Last Thursday, Rachel and Eloise Telford curated the Brisbane premiere of "The Place Man," delving into the roots of the placemaking movement through the life of Fred Kent. The event featured a panel discussion on placemaking for Brisbane with Peter Hyland, Brooke Williams, Jonathan Sriranganathan, and Bec Mac, moderated by UQ's Laurel Johnson "When reflecting on the film, our panellists were asked about one thing they could change about our city – and all echoed similar sentiments of placing people and place first." #placemaking #city #Brisbane #WestEnd4101

Very proud of the Recreation industry (which aquatics falls under) for tackling this ever-growing topic. With opportunities for hands-on work that includes meaningful interactions with others, as well as variety in learning opportunities, recreation roles definitely attract many neurodivergent people. Passionate about their careers as they may be, it doesn’t make their challenges any less difficult. Chances are, you already know someone who is considered neurodivergent—but it can be difficult to tell, as rather gifted neurodivergent individuals figure out ways to hide their “differences” in order to fit in. Take a listen—you may learn how to help a fellow colleague.
It's the last episode of 2023 and we're closing out the year with two AMAZING guests 🎙️ Cort and Christina chat with Kande Jones, the Director of Development for the Mulvane Recreation Commission in Mulvane, KS, and Dave McDaniel III, the Operations Coordinator for the City of Mobile Parks and Recreation Department. Kande and Dave were two of the speakers at the Neurodiversity and Inclusive Workplaces: Insights From Park and Recreation Professionals during our Annual Conference in Dallas. In this episode we recap their session at our Annual Conference, discuss Kande and Dave's perspectives as neurodivergent park and recreation professionals, how to build welcoming spaces, why parks and recreation can be an attractive field, and a LOT more. You won't want to miss this conversation, give it a listen: https://lnkd.in/ev7T67E8 #PowerOfParks #NRPAConference2023 #WhereCommunityGrows #WhereYouBelong #OpenSpaceRadio

"In an era where placemaking is at the forefront of #urbandevelopment discussions, it is imperative that we do not leave its definition to chance... Let us remember that clarity in our understanding of placemaking is not just an intellectual exercise; it's a safeguard for the future well-being of our #neighborhoods and #cities." Ryan Smolar of PlacemakingUS makes the case for a stronger definition for #placemaking to prevent it from being co-opted: https://lnkd.in/g5C7UBx8 Citing the work or words of Ramon Marrades, Kady Yellow, Ethan Kent, Juanita Hardy, Project for Public Spaces, Placemaking Europe, International Downtown Association, Richard Amore, PLA/AICP, Place Collective UK, Mike Lydon, Anthony Garcia, Mindy Fullilove, MD, Majora Carter, Madeleine Spencer, Bruce Appleyard, and others...
