How can we solve the challenge of sectarian tensions in the workplace once and for all? Here’s a simple, clear plan to help build unity and create a positive work environment: [1] Understand the Problem: - Listen: Talk to employees to understand their concerns and experiences. - Observe: Notice any divisions or tensions among team members. [2] Promote Open Communication: - Encourage Dialogue: Create safe spaces for open conversations where everyone can share their thoughts and feelings. - Active Listening: Pay close attention to what employees are saying and show that you value their input. [3] Set Clear Policies: - No Tolerance: Implement a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination and harassment. - Equality for All: Ensure that all policies promote fairness and equality for everyone. [4] Foster Inclusivity: - Team Activities: Organize activities that bring employees together and promote teamwork. - Celebrate Diversity: Recognize and celebrate different cultures and traditions within the workplace. [5] Provide Training: - Awareness Programs: Offer training sessions on cultural sensitivity and inclusivity. - Leadership Training: Train managers to handle conflicts and promote a positive work environment. When I ask employees, especially those from under-represented groups, what outcome they most want from #DEI efforts, the answer is consistent and surprisingly simple. ❌ They don't ask for #erg initiatives (although those have a significant value). ❌❌ They don't ask for #implicitbias training (although such training has its place). ❌❌❌ They don't ask for #belonging (although, indeed, that matters - but it's harder to define, takes longer to experience and evaluate, and has a ring of condescension built into it). The employees I speak to and survey ask for #respect. #leadinginclusion #HR Here's a resource to help them get it.
