Education is the heartbeat of progress, the foundation for peace, and the catalyst for change. This year’s theme, "Exploring the Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Human Agency in Education," invites us to reimagine learning in a world where technology and humanity meet. As an education enthusiast, a librarian, and information literacy advocate, this day holds deep meaning for me. It is a moment to reflect on how we can leverage AI to create inclusive, innovative, and equitable education systems, while preserving the essence of human creativity, ethics, and agency. Artificial intelligence offers immense opportunities: personalized learning, data-driven solutions, and global access to knowledge. Yet, it is our responsibility to guide this transformation with a human-centered approach, where technology serves as a tool to enhance, not replace, the values of empathy, collaboration, and critical thinking. Earlier today at Solace Model school, we had the incredible opportunity to commemorate the International Day of Education 2025. It was a privilege to engage with the bright minds and future leaders of tomorrow, encouraging them to embrace education as a tool for peace, innovation, and transformation. Together, we explored how technology like artificial intelligence can enhance learning while reminding them of the irreplaceable power of human creativity, values, and agency. The students’ enthusiasm, curiosity, and dreams for a brighter future were inspiring! They are the generation that will shape a world where knowledge and innovation meet compassion and ethical responsibility. As we celebrate the International Day of Education, I am reminded of the immense potential we have to transform learning for children in vulnerable communities, especially in Africa’s rural areas. In my work with World Vision Southern Africa, I have seen firsthand how limited access to schools, resources, and technology can hold children back. But these barriers are not the end of their story. With innovative solutions like AI and a commitment to preserving human agency, we can create opportunities where they’re needed most. Education isn’t just about classrooms and books, it’s about equity, empowerment, and ensuring every child, no matter where they live, has a chance to dream and thrive. As we navigate the age of AI, let’s use it as a tool to bridge gaps, not create them. Let’s make education more inclusive, accessible, and human-centered.
