From Inside Philanthropy: FCAA’s Masen Davis discusses how a drop in #HIV grantmaking threatens #health and #humanrights for millions around the world. Thanks to medical breakthroughs, “we actually have a choice today to end HIV as a global health threat… yet we’re still not putting in the resources,” Davis says. The fight against HIV is far from over, and it's not just about funding—it's about developing inclusive policies that end discrimination and ensure equitable access to services. Stigma is still a killer, especially in high-burden regions like Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and areas affected by conflict. While funding has driven significant advances in treatment and prevention, it won't be enough to end the epidemic by 2030. We have evidence-based, tried-and-tested solutions for reaching key populations with the services and treatments they need. These interventions can effectively prevent HIV and other co-morbidities such as STIs, Hep C, and TB, particularly among high-risk groups. Yet, philanthropy's focus is dwindling, with a 6% decrease in funding last year. This decline hits hardest where it's needed most—among populations like injecting drug users, prisoners, men who have sex with men, transgender people, and vulnerable young women. Meanwhile, HIV continues to surge in regions where healthcare access is compromised. Ending HIV requires more than money—it demands a global commitment to human rights and addressing the underlying issues of discrimination, criminalization, and inequality. We have the tools and knowledge to turn the tide, but without urgent action, we risk letting this preventable epidemic continue to claim lives. #EndHIV #GlobalHealth #HumanRights #HealthEquity #HIVPrevention #LGBTQRights #PhilanthropyMatters #PublicHealth

As INGO or national NGO requires core funding so do grassroots organizations. For the ecosystem to be complete and responsive, core flexible funding to grassroots organizations is the way to go
Providing core, flexible and long-term funding to community-led networks works! Data collected by Robert Carr Fund clearly demostrates progress in organizational strengthening, networks' influence and increased capacity to build movements. Chart below is a part of the 2023 Annual Report, showcasing remarkable progress in the global HIV response, demonstrating the power of community-led action. In 2023, RCF invested $11.4 million in community-led and civil society networks in #HIV response. In the current funding cycle we provide 25 grants awarded to 71 global and regional networks, our largest cohort to date. Our grantee partners implement programs in 130 countries across the globe. Please join me (or help spread the word) for an insightful #webinar that delves into the unique challenges and disparities faced by #Hispanic and #Latino communities in the fight against #HIV. Despite overall declines in HIV infection rates, Latinos continue to experience disproportionately high rates of new diagnoses, particularly in the #Southeast. We'll explore the systemic, cultural, and economic barriers—such as #racism, l#anguage barriers, and #medicalmistrust —that contribute to these disparities, and discuss why #publichealth efforts often fall short in addressing the needs of this diverse population. The webinar will also highlight successful community-based strategies and interventions, including culturally competent care models and the importance of access to prevention tools like #PrEP. Whether you're a healthcare provider, advocate, or community leader, this session will provide valuable insights and practical approaches to help improve HIV outcomes for Latinos. New data released today by the Kirby Institute shows that, over the last decade, #HIV diagnoses in Australia have continued to follow a downward trend. 📉 While there were 722 new HIV diagnoses reported nationally in 2023 – up from 553 in 2022 – the researchers still reported a lower number of annual cases compared to pre-pandemic levels, and a long-term trend of declining diagnoses. “The increase in 2023, compared to COVID pandemic years, is likely associated with the resumption of pre-COVID sexual behaviours, testing and the movement of people in and out of the country,” says Dr Skye McGregor, head of the Surveillance Innovation Group at the Kirby Institute. “However, encouragingly, new diagnoses are still lower than pre-pandemic levels, and there is no interruption to our long-term trend of decline.” Read the full media release here: https://lnkd.in/gviqFpHZ

For the past six years, we have been focused on reaching men with HIV testing and treatment, and for good reason. Men are less likely to test for HIV, more likely to delay starting treatment, more likely to disengage from care, less likely to reach viral suppression, and more likely to die of HIV-related causes. But since it's International Women's Day, we do have one thing to say about women: We should never propose or accept solutions for reaching men that come at women's expense. Fast-tracking, we're looking at you. 👀 When we let men go to the front of the queue simply because they are men, that decision is not without a cost, and that cost is born by the women in the clinic waiting area who must now wait even longer to be seen. The impulse is understandable and probably well-intentioned--we are desperate to engage and retain more men, and we think women will wait regardless, so we prioritize the ones we're most at risk of losing. But the bottom line is that it's not fair, and it's also not necessary. Our Coach Mpilo model is achieving 97% retention among men by focusing on strengthening motivation and resilience, without relying on fast-tracking. We can reach men in ways that are fair and equitable to women. Let's make that the standard. #InternationalWomensDay Population Services International Matchboxology Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Trans and gender diverse communities are six times more likely to contract HIV, with trans men facing a 6.8 times higher risk and trans women a 6.6 times higher risk compared to the general population. At the same time, these communities are severely underfunded. The Global Fund supports multicounty grants to accelerate the end of epidemics and to strengthen health systems by tackling regional bottlenecks. A request for proposals for multicounty grants focused on strengthening #HIV prevention programs for #keypopulations is now available. We strongly encourage trans and gender diverse organizations operating in West and Central Africa (Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Niger and Chad) to apply by 17 February 2025: https://lnkd.in/dwyucZ7y
