Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia (PVNH) is a developmental brain disorder that causes learning disabilities and seizures. This happens when nerve cells abnormally clump around the brain's ventricles. PVNH mostly affects women with epilepsy, but men can also be affected - sometimes more severely. Symptoms in men can include epilepsy, intellectual disabilities, and other congenital irregularities. People with PVNH experience focal and generalised tonic-clonic seizures. The type of seizures depend on where the clumps are and which brain region is affected. Diagnosis is best done through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and an electroencephalogram (EEG) if seizures are a concern.
