I would always recommend practicing structural engineers read CROSS reports. They always raise interesting, important and sometimes terrifying trends, issues and challenges. What I found particularly interesting in the latest edition is discussions around the ‘evolution of risk’. The way we use (and change) buildings is evolving. The loads applied to existing carparks for example are increasing, with SUVs and electric vehicles increasing in popularity. The fire implications of large batteries and greater plastic content in the cars also needs careful assessment. Whilst I was impressed with the proposed use of novel ideas and technologies, such as the use of ANPR to identify trends and consequences on carpark structures, I was also disappointed to see practices such as retrofitting drainage pipes by drilling in punching shear zones, the use of one (yes one) bolt connection details in critical locations and the alleged plagiarism of robustness calculations. Construction is underway on the New Everton Stadium. The project is being touted as a catalyst to help transform Bramley-Moore Dock, Liverpool’s iconic waterfront in the UK. The 52,888-seater arena is scheduled to open for the start of the 2024-25 Premiere Season. Located a short distance from the city's center, fans can walk or take public transport to the venue. The scope of the project includes constructing the stadium within tight logistical confinements while paying respect to the local heritage. More than 6,000 components for the new stadium, including the pre-cast composite red brick façade panels have been designed to remind fans of the historic Archibald Leitch-designed wrought iron trusses at Goodison Park. Laing O'Rourke is using #4D construction simulations to visualize the #construction sequences to drive the stadium build. In addition, drone technology is used to track progress against the 4D model ensuring the team has the most recent data for day-to-day project management. The 4D model was fundamental to the team’s collaboration, enabling multiple disciplines to work together to submit the project ahead of schedule and within budget. Successfully working in a collaborative 4D digital environment optimized project delivery and has transformed how Laing will deliver complex construction projects in the future.
