4 Questions on the Creative Process with Artist Jeri Lewis Edwards Autumn is a time of transition as summer’s abundance gives way to the sparseness of fall. It offers the opportunity both to reflect, and to look forward, presenting a compelling reminder of impermanence, that we — and our surroundings — are constantly developing. Perfectly fitting, #sparkchamber is thrilled to welcome artist Jeri Lewis Edwards. From love of nature, to openness to new influences — or seeing “old” influences from a new perspective — Jeri’s story emphasizes how vital it is to embrace the present moment. In her own words: “I’m a naturalist, wildlife advocate — especially when it comes to advocating preservation of habitat — a published poet, and a mixed-media artist. I know it sounds cliche, but like so many of my fellow artists, I’ve always wanted to be an artist. But without any nurturing I put that dream aside. “And after getting a degree in marketing, I developed my own recruiting consulting. For 33 years I partnered with founders and CEOs to help them build their entrepreneurially-spirited executive team. I have to say that I was quite good at “match making,” and now that intuitive voice inside me is still quite alive as I spend time in my art studio. “I grew up spending time in the woods, and as I got older I found I couldn’t be away from being outside all the time. So I began to backpack all throughout the wilderness areas of the U.S., as well as biking along back roads. Today my favorite activities continue to be hiking, biking, and kayaking. “Years ago, I put a pair of binoculars in my hand and that completely changed my world! I realized that all throughout my life seeing wildlife was the highlight of a day for me. And viewing birds through my binoculars or a scope is a daily highlight! Being able to identify birds around me by their sounds is an added enrichment. Whether it’s seeing and hearing birds, identifying new plants, mushrooms, or insects, all of these contribute to heightening my sense of listening and of the wonder of nature. And these experiences influence my art or my approach to my process, whether through my visual art or through my poetry.” Her portrait work is truly remarkable! 4 Questions on the Creative Process with Jeff Woodrow Just a little over five years ago, #sparkchamber caught up with woodworker, watercolorist, musician, craftsman, restorationist, wordsmith, photographer, illustrator, cyclist, conceptualist, teacher, husband, father — Renaissance man, Jeffery Woodrow. In the fall of 2020, he took a hiatus from posting his work on Instagram [and we missed his uplifting, playful, insightful energy!] But a month ago, he dropped back in! Couple things. First, in his status-change-announcement reel Woodrow mentions that although he hadn’t been sharing his work online, he never stopped making it. Such a core truth: the drive to create absolutely does not include a requirement to publicize. Second, June is LGTBQ+ Pride month honoring the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, a catalyst for the LGTBQ+ rights in the United States and around the world. On his website, Woodrow discusses a piece he made for his transgender daughter. “At the age of three, she told us she was born with a girl brain and a boy body. During this time, my wife and I decided to encourage her to be, act, and feel in the way she felt most comfortable and to know that we would fully support her.” He made a 3D anaglyph art screenprint to represent that time of transition and her parents’ choice to look through an inclusive lens. “This is a piece I am incredibly proud of.” Another core truth — really the truest, the purest message: BE YOURSELF. In celebration of all that is hopeful, positive, inclusive, and expansive, we shine a light on Woodrow’s thoughts on the creative process originally posted June 3, 2019. 🤩🌈 bit.ly/FFSCWoodrow2

Happy Labor Day! Today is Labor Day and #sparkchamber is taking the day off — a concept that only exists thanks to the dedication and hard work of the labor movement. Organizers fought for workers’ rights, better wages, reasonable hours, safer working conditions, and the provision of health benefits and aid to workers who were injured or retired. Labor Day is a tribute to the social and economic achievements of workers everywhere, honoring their contribution to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of countries throughout the world. Vote for representatives who share — and fight for — your ideals! Labor Day also marks the official end of summer, so we’re off to the last official BBQ of the season. Thank you workers, thank you organizers, thank you grill. 😎☀️🙏 bit.ly/FFSCLaborDay2024

4 Questions on the Creative Process with Kristen De Palma Language is an artform, and today’s #sparkchamber visitor takes that literally. We are thrilled to welcome lettering artist, muralist, and illustrator Kristen De Palma, who for nearly a decade has been bringing stories to life — for book covers, package design, murals, and editorial content — through the beauty of lettering. Though it started as a hobby, she turned it into her full-time career in 2021. Working with big-name clients like Adidas, Pepsi, and Chatelaine, Kristen’s marketing/design focus is message-driven, ensuring that the work will engage and connect with her clients’ target audiences, “From Instagrammable moments to integrated campaigns, always top-of-mind is how a client’s investment will increase their engagement with customers and boost their business beyond the short-term.” Living and working in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Kristen has designed and painted murals in dozens of locations in the area. “I particularly enjoy partnering with local townships to create meaningful, eye-catching artwork that represents an area’s unique character and brightens communities.” A big believer in looking to something old to create something new, “An antique shop is my favorite place to seek inspiration! I am inspired by all things vintage — particularly, Victorian-era design where everything was hand-drawn and incredibly ornate.” Her love of that era fueled her most recent personal project, To & From Gift Co., offering thoughtful gifts with special meanings inspired by the secret language of flowers. bit.ly/FFSCKristenDePalma
