We proudly announce that ScholarGPS has ranked MPIC as the #1 non-academic institution in "Atmospheric Chemistry"! 🏆🌍 Additionally, the institute boasts 4 scholars among the Top 10 in 2022 which is the most recent ranking. 🎉👏 Atmospheric chemistry explores the chemical reactions and processes taking place in the atmosphere, focusing on the chemistry that influences air pollution and global climate change through the emission of gases and particles into the air. It is a multidisciplinary approach of research and draws on environmental chemistry, physics, meteorology, computer modeling, oceanography, geology, volcanology, and other disciplines. Research is increasingly connected with other areas of study such as climatology. 🌫️🌎🔬 ScholarGPS is an AI-powered analytics platform evaluating over 30 million scholars across 14 fields, 177 disciplines, and 350,000 specialties, providing insights and rankings for academia, corporate R&D, and government agencies. What are the most humble scientific disciplines? ▶️ Leslie et al. (2015, Science) surveyed 1,820 postdoctoral fellows and graduate students from 30 scientific disciplines about how they believe that "being a top scholar of their own discipline requires a special aptitude that just can't be taught". That is, how BRILLIANCE matters in the field. ➜ Horizontal axis ▶️ Bronski et al. (2023) extend this analysis by asking 507 Ph.D.. holders how they would rate the "scientificness" of other disciplines, i.e. how they perceive BRILLIANCE in other scientific fields. ➜ Vertical axis ▶️ The most humble scientific disciplines (based on the survey's "Perceived Brilliance / Self-rated Brilliance" measure) are found towards the natural sciences, such as "Neuroscience", "Earth Atmospheric and Marine Science", and "Chemistry". But also "Linguistic" and "Statistic" researchers seem to underestimate their perceived "scientificness". Maybe, also the perceived scientific picture is biased? Is "scientificness" often purely associated with the derivation and use of mathematical equations? #science #research

The #SCGSR application workshop will include panels with #DOE #NationalLaboratory #scientists. Join us to ask them about research going on in their groups and in their National Labs. Here are some of our panelists: Dr. Kirsten Hofmockel – PNNL – Soil #biogeochemistry, understanding #ecosystem responses to #environmental changes. Dr. Egemen Kolemen – PPPL – Dynamics and control theory in #plasma #physics. Dr. Christopher Shaddix – SNL - #Laser diagnostics, soot formation, coal and #biomass #combustion and #gasification. Dr. Brian Lenardo – SLAC – Experimental #particle physics, rare phenomena, nEXO experiment. Along many other scientists, they give us a flavor of the type of research PhD students can do while leading collaborations through an SCGSR award.
