In January, our first-year master’s students will start the new semester with Winter School. This year's Artists in Residence (AiR) are: Irene Luque Martín and Johnathan Subendran. They have been invited by Anna Gasco, Head of Urbanism, to curate this edition. During Winter School, Irene and Johnathan will challenge students to critically examine the role of design in addressing injustice, particularly in the Global South. In interdisciplinary teams, students will tackle various assignments. For nine days, they will work intensively and engage in discussions. Students will learn to transform ideas into inspiring products, with the final outcomes ranging from built objects to statements, manifestos, plans, visions, and ideas. So much looking forward to the start of our Winter School at Academie van Bouwkunst Amsterdam next January: Justice by Design. I invited Irene Luque Martín and Johnathan Subendran to challenge our students to examine the role of design in addressing injustice, particularly in the Global South. What is the role of spatial design in relation to social and ecological injustice? In five case-based studios, topics such as displaced matriarchies in the Western Sahara, climate injustice in Manila, and refugee camps in Jordan will be explored. In a sixth studio, these findings will be integrated, with students encouraged to investigate the relationship between power structures and design as a means of justice. The program culminates in a collective manifesto and public debate on design’s role in transforming unjust conditions.

Why is the vast majority of student accommodation the same? That is the question our University Design Forum research group has been asking. In this update to our paper, Student Accommodation- Challenging the Norm, we look at the student voice and interview institutional and private providers. Huge thanks to our discussion panel members and insightful interviewees. Credit to my research colleagues, John Ridgett (AtkinsRealis) and Claire Jackson (GallifordTry). https://lnkd.in/ebVWzRm8

Completing my Master's studies at Erasmus University in the Netherlands, I delved deep into Social Design Patterns, exploring how projects can amplify social interaction. My thesis explored these patterns, aligning theory with practical observation. In these posts, I will attempt to share the patterns along with my observations. One standout pattern is the creation of open pathways through buildings, fostering community interaction in public spaces. In Delft's Centraal Wonen, residents collaborated to construct pathways, linking their community with the neighborhood. This initiative sparked shared activities and drew neighbors into communal engagement. During my observations of older buildings in Egypt, particularly in Qina, I discovered a similar concept. Generations ago, inhabitants created pathways connecting buildings to foster social interaction and connect people together. These examples underscore the power of social sustainability and design principles in shaping vibrant, connected communities. #SocialDesign #CommunityInteraction #SustainableLiving #UrbanDesign #CommunityEngagement #SocialSustainability #NeighborhoodConnections #ArchitectureForPeople . .

I like the idea of nominating someone. That’s not what we usually see in job descriptions but it is so often how we think of positions, or certainly what I very often think when I see an interesting new post: “I think my colleague/ friend/ co-worker would be brilliant at that job” No doubt there are amazing people out there who could bring Historic Preservation and Cultural Heritage into a contemporary context - thinking about what has been, to inform what could be. Using historic contexts as a platform to interrogate present day challenges. And everything in between. If you know that person, send them this job (and also, not only does this sound like a really great role, but also what a salary! Imagine getting that sort of pay-grade in the UK. Unheard of. This is serious level of salary, to remunerate whoever is out there who is seriously skilled). Also, research shows women are more likely to shy away from applying for job opportunities, particularly more advanced, higher-paying positions, because “they’re concerned they aren’t qualified enough, whereas men don’t seem to worry about their skills matching the specific job requirements as much” according to research by Harvard Business School Associate Professor Katherine B. Coffman. So, taking up that idea as Dr. Harriet Harriss suggests, nominate someone. Encourage, support and give confidence to those in your network to apply. #Apply #Opportunity #HistoricPreservation #Buildings #People #Place #NominateHer #NominateThem #NewJob
