In this episode Lee discusses the largest executive order of all time, the FTC's (anti-trust related?) inquiry, and the swift action of Tay-Tay's swifties when the X-rated, dark side of AI deep faked on the beloved pop star. It's fantastic that Taylor's Swifties were on guard and quickly sprang to action to protect her. Sadly, this is a serious problem (assault) on innocent children and largely women, who have little recourse. Laws are warranted, given such actions are criminal in only a few states as of now. However, laws provide victims scant redress. I feel that after 5 or 6 years of saying the same thing over and over again we are finally at a point where people are seriously thinking about their risk tolerance around the use of artificial intelligence, and particularly that it now costs more to NOT use AI in compliance and risk applications than it does to use it. The business risk economics finally caught up to the argument, but most banks have already left a lot of money on the table by missing this opportunity years ago. Money will come back some other way. But I'm now hyper focused on the second part of what we've been saying, which is it is irrational to use AI for the sole purpose of eliminating false positives, as opposed to increasing the rate of detection of true positives. Financial crimes compliance folks are unfortunately incentivized by regulators and the safety of the status quo to underestimate and downplay the reputational, compliance, socioeconomic, and HUMAN cost of a missed True Positive - i.e. to avoid or defer conversations about what is below the line. This must stop. I hope we seriously start engaging in that discussion today.
