In our increasingly digital age, the importance of physical spaces for human connection has never been greater. #thirdspaces and #thirdplaces foster innovation, creativity, and a sense of belonging. They provide opportunities for serendipitous encounters and unexpected collaborations. However, the content and business model of this critical societal infrastructure will always be the challenge even if it’s a cafe, co-working scene, community garden, art gallery, or public library. I have always been impressed by how for example #atriumljungberg excel in this. This for me, is creating true property value while building a resilient society.

Looking forward to speaking at the NLA Summit, which is exploring the future of the #CityofLondon and the #DraftCityPlan2040, launched in April 2024 and focused on three key pillars: #economic, #social, and #environmental and aims to shape the #builtenvironment sustainably, support businesses and the people working in the City. One of the key drivers for the radical transformation into a #DestinationCity has to be the use of #culture and #placemaking to tell the story’s and provide the ‘software’ stories and creative vision. It was a brave decision by the City to insist on a robust and deliverable cultural strategy as part of the planning application for new development. This is not the random use of #106 or the idealism of a #percentforarts scheme but an integrated approach sitting alongside decsions on architecture and public realm and part of the economic planning and viability of a scheme. It's a big experiment! one which places the arts at an early stage in the development process, rather than an add on or arbitrary decision, although legacy and long term viability are still areas that need work. On a personal level I feel it has vindicated an approach I started back in 2002 with the #GrosvenorWaterside development for Berkeley Group Plc, where artists and creatives were embedded in the design team from the outset. So, in my 7 minutes I will review some of the projects we have worked on thus far and share insight into the process of getting them accepted by the client, finding the right cultural partners and involving the #community and other stakeholders and finally navigating the planning process. This is an initiative which should inspire other boroughs, towns and cities to develop similar strategies. In June, our Si Cities Hub Team had the privilege of hosting a dynamic session at The Nature of Cities Festival in Berlin at the inspiring Atelier Gardens. Titled "Demystifying Systems Thinking for Complex Urban Challenges," our workshop brought together an incredible mix of urban innovators, planners, and changemakers from across the globe. Through collaborative systems mapping, we explored the intricate connections that shape our cities, helping participants uncover how diverse elements—both human and environmental—interact to create complex urban ecosystems. Our core team member, Luciana (Luci), shared some insightful takeaways from the in-person session: 1. Moving Beyond the Sum of the Parts: Systems are more than individual components. It’s the relationships between parts that reveal the true patterns and behaviors of urban environments—this is where systems mapping becomes invaluable. 2. Cities as Complex Systems: Every person and role—from politicians to cyclists—sees the city through a unique lens. By understanding these multiple perspectives, we can design urban solutions that cater to everyone. 3. Making Connections: Systems mapping with diverse groups uncovers hidden patterns and opens doors to innovative solutions that address root causes, not just symptoms. Whether you're tackling urban planning, sustainability, or community development, systems thinking can provide fresh insights to help navigate complexity. 🚀 Interested in being part of these transformative conversations? 🌍 Creating Richer Maps Through Collective Efforts 🗺️ Our Si Cities Hub Team—purvisha S., Luciana (Luci) Maia, Birte Dohlen & Anya Low 美蓮—recently hosted a session titled "Demystifying Systems Thinking for Complex Urban Challenges" at The Nature of Cities Festival in Berlin, held at the beautiful Atelier Gardens. 📍 It was an incredible opportunity to connect, collaborate, and be inspired by a global community of city makers shaping the future. 💡 Introducing Complex Urban Challenges into Mapping Sessions: When we frame challenges around relatable stories, magic happens. Despite coming from different cities and scenarios, storytelling helps ground us. A map facilitates discussions, allowing us to collectively add perspectives and achieve a broader view. Our session was unique as we agreed, disagreed, and discussed, making the mapping process richer and learning from each other. This introductory workshop aimed to demystify systems thinking, making it accessible and practical. 🌟 Diversity brings richer results. 🌟 Join our Si Cities Hub here to connect & engage with global city makers: https://lnkd.in/eYUXsWWy #UrbanChallenges #SystemsThinking #CollaborativeMapping #CityMakers #TheNatureOfCities #DiversityInCities #Innovation #Berlin #AtelierGardens

Over a decade ago, we launched Urban Impact Lab with a simple yet powerful mission: to transform how people see, engage with, and connect to the cities they call home. Our journey started began with a transportation project. Transit is a great equalizer—a shared experience that we all have to deal with and shapes our daily life and the urban landscape. Improving transit isn’t just about moving people from point A to point B; it transforms how we see and experience our cities, enhances quality of life, resilience, and equity. That’s what sparked the Purple Line: a project that invited the community to reimagine the role of transit in Miami. Partnering with 25+ local organizations, we created an immersive experience under the I-395 underpass in the Design District—a pop-up Grand Central Statation with art, performances, and activations that drew in over 2,000 participants. The Purple Line became more than an event; it inspired lasting change, including the founding of Transit Alliance Miami, a dedicated advocacy organization. Fast forward to today, Urban Impact Lab continues to evolve, innovating in areas like creative placemaking, climate resilience, economic development and urban mobility. Our human-centered, collaborative approach has engaged thousands, transformed public spaces, influenced policy changes, and expanded our reach beyond Miami. As we look to the future, we’re committed to making cities vibrant, inclusive, and resilient. Join us in creating thriving urban spaces where everyone can connect, grow, and thrive. #UrbanImpactLab #Miami #UrbanInnovation #Cities #Transit #CreativePlacemaking #Resilience #CommunityEngagement #DecadeOfImpact
