#latestactivities Delegation of the global civil society at the United Nations NEW YORK CITY—September 28, 2024—First time in history a delegation of the global civil society convened in New York City this September during a series of significant United Nations events to negotiate relevant urgent issues. These included the Summit of the Future Action Days, the Summit of the Future, the United Nations Global Compact Leaders Summit, and the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79). The reformation of institutions, the impending failure of the SDGs, and other critical issues such as peace restoration, systems confrontation, re-naturalization, and specific topics like the circular economy and child slavery were on the agenda. The agenda setting has been conducted by members of the global civil society representing all world regions and SDG areas. The outcomes of these discussions will serve as the foundation for future collaboration in addressing global challenges. The Global Society News (GSN) team was on the ground, engaging with institutional representatives, NGOs, citizens, and members of the Global Society Delegation at the United Nations. Summit of the Future Action Days The delegation actively participated in the Summit of the Future Action Days, on September 20th and 21st, bringing their agenda into collaborative efforts aimed at shaping global policies. They worked closely with global youth networks, such as the United Nations Major Group for Children and Youth, conducting workshops to integrate young voices into the broader discussion. The youth's active participation was highlighted by UN News, emphasizing their crucial role in addressing pressing global issues. Summit of the Future At the Summit of the Future, on September 22nd and 23rd, the delegation contributed to finalizing the Pact for the Future, an initiative aimed at accelerating progress toward sustainable development and addressing urgent global challenges. Their input ensured that perspectives from all world regions and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) areas were included, particularly on topics such as institutional reform, peace restoration, systems confrontation, re-naturalization, circular economy, and the eradication of child slavery. Yet, achieving and sustaining peace remains an ongoing endeavor, requiring concerted efforts from individuals, governments, and international organizations. Education emerges as a powerful tool in promoting peace, instilling values of tolerance, empathy, and understanding from an early age. By nurturing a culture of peace within schools and communities, future generations can embrace diversity and resolve conflicts through dialogue and mutual respect. Furthermore, diplomacy plays a pivotal role in preventing and resolving conflicts between nations. Diplomatic channels offer a platform for dialogue and negotiation, facilitating the resolution of disputes through peaceful means. International cooperation and multilateralism are essential in addressing global challenges and promoting a rules-based order that upholds peace and security for all. In addition, fostering inclusive societies is vital in mitigating tensions and promoting social cohesion. Embracing diversity and safeguarding the rights of marginalized groups foster a sense of belonging and acceptance, reducing the likelihood of discrimination and conflict. Empowering women and youth, who often bear the brunt of violence and instability, is particularly crucial in building resilient communities and advancing peace. As individuals, we also have a role to play in promoting peace in our daily lives. Acts of kindness, compassion, and reconciliation can ripple outward, fostering goodwill and understanding within our communities. By embracing the principles of non-violence and practicing conflict resolution skills, we contribute to the creation of a more peaceful world, one interaction at a time. In conclusion, peace stands as both a noble aspiration and a practical necessity in today's interconnected world. By recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of every individual, and by working together to address the root causes of conflict, we can pave the way for a future where peace prevails, and all people can live with dignity, security, and hope. We need funding that matches real needs, free from politically motivated reallocation. 🌍🌿 The rise in conflicts and climate-related disasters demands a multisectoral, prevention-oriented, and nexus approach to tackle root causes.

The DSMUN Secretariat is pleased to present the theme for the 17th edition of The Doon School Model United Nations Conference: "Musings of a Divided World, Resolutions of a United One" The world is disjointed with its distinct opinions and conflicting ideologies. At DSMUN’24, we believe in creating a platform where problems can be scrutinised and all enduring conflicts can be tackled. With the escalation of global conflicts, it is no secret that the world is integrated with divided viewpoints and we feel that it is essential to come up with solutions to all the pressing global concerns. Our divided world yearns for bold initiatives and healthy discourse that bridge the gaps of mistrust and misunderstanding. The conference acts as a microcosm of the world at large, and the world, in all its complexity, is conducive to conflicting perspectives. United Nations Observances The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool. The United Nations observes designated days, weeks, years, and decades, each with a theme, or topic. By creating special observances, the United Nations promotes international awareness and action on these issues. Each international day offers many actors the opportunity to organize activities related to the theme of the day. Organizations and offices of the United Nations system, and most importantly, governments, civil society, the public and private sectors, schools, universities and, more generally, citizens, make an international day a springboard for awareness-raising actions. The majority of observances have been established by resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly, although some have been designated by UN specialized agencies. The United Nations also observes anniversaries of key events in its history.

How can science contribute to peace? 🕊   In an era of emerging conflicts, now more than ever, we need to empower science to have an active role in responding to our multi-faceted challenges. On this #WorldScienceDay for Peace and Development, we reflect on how we can build trust in science through citizen engagement and transparency. We also reflect on how science can become a driver for positive change, and a key tool for conflict prevention and peacebuilding.    Discover the #HorizonEU research projects working to give #peace and the development of inclusive, fair, and equal societies a chance.
