#NoBurnWednesday Environmental groups are urging the Iloilo City government in the Philippines to reconsider its WtE project due to concerns about toxic emissions. The proposed facility aims to generate 2.4 megawatts of electricity from non-recyclable waste. GAIA member, EcoWaste Coalition calls for more research and community consultation on waste management strategies, citing that incineration could increase toxic emissions and negatively impact public health and the environment. The group further demands transparency from the city government regarding the project's environmental impact and suggests exploring alternative WtE methods. https://lnkd.in/gzYpk3M4 #GoForZeroWaste #BreakFreeFromPlastic #BurnNot #ZeroWasteIsEasierTogether #ZeroWasteIsForEveryone #BurnNotIloilo #BurnNotPhilippines

The Drina River, an ugly face of emerald beauty 🍃 💎 The Drina River in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the town of Višegrad, faces a recurring environmental crisis as tons of waste, including plastic bottles, used tires, old appliances and various debris, accumulate behind the improvised barrier set by the local hydroelectric power plant. Throughout the year, the river carries waste from illegal landfills located upstream, across the Western Balkans (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro), causing serious pollution concerns. The inadequate waste management system becomes more evident after heavy precipitation when the water level rises, bringing a surge of waste that overwhelms the existing barriers. Environmental activists emphasize the need for regional authorities to adopt better waste management standards. This story is a sad reminder of the environmental issues faced by the Western Balkans region where limited progress is achieved in establishing effective waste disposal systems. Complex environmental problems escalating near the city of Višegrad require joint efforts to solve them, in a situation where quick and easy solutions are not available. Timelapse video depicts the accumulation of floating waste (grey-brown variable shapes on water surface) in the Drina River, from the beginning of 2020 to the end of 2023. #copernicus #sentinelhub #sentinel2 #earthobservation #remotesensing #wastemanagement #environmentalprotection

🗑 We're taking a stand against waste pollution with our Environmental Pollution Programme. Through community-led efforts, we're making strides in mitigating waste pollution in South Africa. 🔍 Partnering with the Institute of Natural Resources NPC, we're empowering communities in South Africa to develop sustainable solutions for waste disposal and repurposing. 🤝 Mobilising communities: Workshops across three case study areas have enhanced understanding of current waste disposal practices and pinpointed illegal dumping sites. 📊 With support from citizen scientists, a waste audit of illegal dumping sites has revealed plastic waste and disposable nappy waste as the most common types of waste dumped within communities. 🌿 These insights will guide us in co-developing effective waste management strategies, while recognising the potential value of waste in supporting economic growth, as well as launching an awareness campaign for positive change. 🌐 Stay tuned for more updates as we work together for a pollution free future for nature, climate and people. Join us in celebrating World Earth Day today! 🌍 🌿 Did you know that South Africa produces approximately 28 kilograms of waste per person annually, which is notably higher than the average of 16 kilograms per person for the rest of the continent? Based on an IUCN study, the country also contributes about 35% of the plastic pollution leaking into the marine environment in southern and east Africa. For more information on the revised draft of the proposed binding treaty entitled “End Plastic Pollution: Towards an Internationally Legally Binding Instrument” see here: https://lnkd.in/gHtaJx8h GELC celebrates that South Africa has a constitutionally enshrined environmental right that also aims to prevent pollution and ecological degradation, which is fully supported by our National Environmental Management Act. #EarthDay2024 #planetoverplastics
