This is a really interesting read. TL:DR COVID-19 is able to infect dopamine neurons, which may be contributing to long COVID symptoms (such as brain fog and depression). The infected neurons go into a state where they don't grow or reproduce. It will be interesting to see if this causes long term damage that increases the chances of patients later developing neurodegenerative diseases connected to the dopamine pathway, such as Parkinson's Disease, the rates of which are already on the rise due to other factors.

We have long known of CNS reservoir persistence, including the work of Dr. Daniel Chertow in December, 2021. He observed persistence in the basal ganglia, to which the substantia nigra belongs. So, this comes as no surprise. We have long known that every cell type that constitutes the CNS reservoir of those living with HIV is productively infected by SARS-Cov-2: perivascular macrophages, the choroid plexus, pericytes, astrocytes, and microglia. The CNS reservoir is expanding on a daily basis relying upon the same mechanism observed in HIV, the Tunneling Nanotube, implicated by Ana Pepe in 2022.
