World Wetlands Day, celebrated annually on 2 February, aims to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and planet. This day also marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar. Wetlands are characterised by ecosystems that are primarily covered with water – water is the main controlling factor in such ecosystems with animal and plant lives. Wetlands contribute immensely to the lives of people and animals, as well as to planet Earth. They are very significant for the environment. Every year, World Wetlands Day is observed to raise awareness for the importance of wetlands for human lives and the planet. As we gear up to celebrate World Wetlands Day for this year, here are a few things that we should keep in mind. #galaxytechfoundation #stemeducation #STEM #astronomy

Today marks World Krill Day, a day dedicated to acknowledging the vital role that krill play in marine ecosystems. These small crustaceans are not only fascinating but also serve as the cornerstone of the Antarctic food web, providing a primary food source for a variety of marine animals, including whales, seals, and penguins. In our carousel, we've highlighted some amazing facts about krill. 👇 Did you know that krill can glow? Or that their swarms are so large they can be seen from space? 😯 Despite their remarkable resilience, krill face significant threats from climate change and overfishing. The reduction of sea ice, which is crucial for their habitats, disrupts their breeding and feeding grounds. Additionally, the rising demand for omega-3 supplements and fish feed poses a risk of localized depletion, endangering krill populations. The decline of krill has far-reaching consequences for the entire ecosystem, putting species like whales, seals, and penguins at risk due to their reliance on krill as a primary food source. 🏔 Support the Antarctica Declaration and the Antarctic Rights initiative to help ensure a sustainable future for these essential creatures and the entire marine ecosystem. Check also the work of Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition , The Pew Charitable Trusts , Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Happy World Krill Day! 🦐 #antarcticrights #worldkrillday #krill #antarctica #southernocean

#Cameratrap #monitoring in a #bird feeding spot at HBLFA Raumberg - Gumpestein, #Austria. The species in the video are: great tit (Parus major), Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) and coal tit (Periparus ater). They´re a perfect example of #coexistence. To be noted: in Austria it´s still winter. The reason why the feeding point has food is because it´s hard for birds to find food in this season. When the temperatures will rise, the point will be emptied to avoid domestication.

World Wetland Day is celebrated annually on February 2 with the aim to create awareness of the vital role wetlands play for people and the planet. The proposal for the convention on wetlands was first made on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar. Wetlands are the parts of the earth where the soil is covered with water. They support both terrestrial and aquatic species. There are five major types of wetlands. They are marine, estuarine, lacustrine, riverine, and palustrine. It is essential to conserve wetlands as they are among the most productive environments. The 2024 theme, "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing", is about the interconnectedness between wetlands and various aspects of human health. MoEF&CC #Proplanetpeople #missionlife
