✍🏻New Blog Alert 🙌🏻 Have you or someone you love been impacted by medical gaslighting? Then you'll have to check out our latest blog! There is something insidious and harmful that has been happening in the healthcare field, and until recently – it was unchecked. It’s only recently that we have even had an appropriate and agreed upon term to help identify it: medical gaslighting. Medical gaslighting is used to describe a situation in which patients have been made to feel (intentionally or unintentionally) like their symptoms were not real, less severe, or even entirely imagined. This is an occurrence that happens unequally to different communities. The people most affected by medical gaslighting are women and people of color. Basically, healthcare providers have historically held the key to the gate you need to enter for healing. And when the healthcare provider has unchecked power like this, it can creates a power differential – one where significant consequences can occur that can negatively impact your health – and your life. That is entirely unfair. You should be able to receive proper care. A healthcare provider’s office or a hospital should be a sanctuary – a place to go for compassionate care and healing. Fascinating research conducted in an emergency ward sheds light on potential discrimination based on a patient's appearance. To sum it up, when it comes to chest pain, men tend to receive higher priority compared to women. This aligns with findings from a study I conducted several years ago (prior to joining WHO) focusing on the elderly. The research revealed that elderly individuals accompanied by someone received higher priority and better care in the emergency ward compared to those who were alone. https://lnkd.in/dA6CdERx

It’s really shocking to me that Florida’s Surgeon General (and head of the Department of Health) Dr. Joseph Lapado is “deferring to parents or guardians” to make decisions about attending school in the midst of a measles outbreak. https://lnkd.in/ejvV8NK3 Not sure what he is thinking, so want to remind him of his duties under Florida statute, particularly 1 (b). Note that it says “The Department shall implement interventions…. When do you feel the right time to start having these conversations?
Continuing the conversation around advance care planning for #NHDD, we're sharing this The Tufts Daily article, From Classroom to Clinic: End-of-life conversations — there’s empathy in foresight. "Taking the time to envision yourself at death’s door is far from a pleasant undertaking. But truthfully, we should be doing it more. Ideally, my patient’s end-of-life wishes should have been discussed years before her admission to the hospital, preferably at an annual wellness visit with her primary care doctor. Family medicine doctors should be experts at end-of-life conversations because having a patient’s wishes in writing makes emergencies less stressful for everyone, especially loved ones." No more excuses, guys! “I had a check-up a while back. I’m not exactly sure when it started. I just didn’t think it was a big deal.” These are words that doctors and nurses have heard more times than they can count, often from male patients who opt to ‘tough it out’ with seemingly insignificant healthcare concerns that later snowball into long-term problems. As an employer, you know the story, too, no doubt. While we live in a society where health awareness is certainly on the rise in the workplace and at home, many men continue to overlook the importance of early intervention. This means that largely preventable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and others continue to be among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among men. The good news is that there is a solution for getting the guys to become more proactive about their health packaged in a primary healthcare solution that is practical, convenient for them and highly affordable for you. With MediClub™, brought to you by National HealthCare Group, it starts by sending a quick and confidential WhatsApp to a qualified nurse who can assist with professional healthcare advice, arrange OTC medication and make GP referrals when needed. What could be simpler than that? Furthermore, with cover for minor procedures in GP rooms, prescribed medication, pathology and radiology tests as well as basic dentistry, annual basic health checks and more, your employees have everything they need to stay on top of their health – an invaluable resource right there in their life’s toolkit. #affordablecare #primarycare #healthtoolkit #preventablediseases #mediclub #menshealth #preventativecare #earlydetection #nationalhealthcaregroup
