#Parachutes are used in multiple fields, such as recreational skydiving, military operations, emergency evacuations and cargo drops. Their history can be traced back to the Renaissance, when Leonardo da Vinci sketched a pyramid-shaped parachute design: however, the first successful parachute jump was made by a French aeronaut, André-Jacques Garnerin, at the end of the 18th century. The parachute was supported by a wooden frame, but the design evolved and the first knapsack parachute was created, which could be worn on the back and deployed quickly. At first it was mainly used for military purposes, but the introduction of the flexible and round canopy parachute significantly increased the popularity of skydiving. Combined Arms - A concept as old as Alexander the Great: Combined arms hit the enemy with two or more arms simultaneously in such a manner that the actions he must take to defend himself from one make him more vulnerable to another. In the case of the 1918 Battle of Hamel, Australian General Monash's Combined Arms Plan unified aircraft, tanks, artillery, and his beloved Australian Infantry. However, Combined Arms as a concept existed in the Ancient World and the Middle Ages, for instance: Phillip II of Macedon (390BC), Alexander the Greats father, combined the Macedonian phalanx with heavy cavalry and other forces. The phalanx would hold the opposing line in place, until the heavy cavalry could smash and break the enemy line by achieving local superiority. Norman Combined Arms Tactics changed British History: At the Battle of Hastings (1066AD) British infantry fighting from behind a shield wall were defeated by a Norman army consisting of archers, infantry, and cavalry. One of the tactics used by the Normans was to tempt the English to leave the shield wall to attack retreating Norman infantry only to destroy them in the open with cavalry under a creeping barrage put up by Norman Archers. The concept of Combined Arms time travelled down to us. This ability of historical fact and concept, to travel across time and place, is but one reason I find history so fascinating. If we listen really hard, we may find wisdom applicable to our current problems. As a military historian who is into the academic study of war, I often fall into the limitations of not completely understand what real time battle experience entails. Most of what I get are testimonies from service colleagues who have been to the arena of blood and steel. This provides me with an approximation of the battle space. But the battlespace is changing and from being controlled miles away, a killer drone will take out enemy combatants with precision. The #Russo-#Ukraine is a case in point. Not only does #drone #warfare lowers the casualty levels in war, it reduces risk, eliminates humanness in war and perhaps, just perhaps affects the level of courage and valour in war. How can the courage quotient of a soldier be measured if he is fighting a riskless war? Soldering by its very nature is defined by risk. Technology may be delivering a lot of positives to war but then it comes along with some negatives. #Dronewarfare #Ukraine #Russia

👊 As NAPCON, Marine Corps University Fight Club's Napoleonic Era #Wargaming Convention, entered dusk, we took learning to the tactical warfighting level and 15mm scale with a fictional Leipzig 1813 scenario that included the British [led by me] 🐎💣⚔ 💥 I was elated to find out that game master Nathan Barrick, PhD had not seen the successful employment of Congreve Rockets from the Royal Horse Artillery in 20 years of playing until I put a well aimed volley into a German [Napoleon Allied] Cavalry squadron, inflicting casualties and spiraling them into disorder. 🎲 The simple battlefield terrain, the detailed historical miniatures, and the fine tuned game abstraction for playability and simulation fidelity provided a rich experience for the practice of tactics and the joy of history. With the right facilitated debrief, the game design would have reinforced several universal tactical tenants for current practitioners. I had some of these in mind to achieve battlefield game success despite limited knowledge of the historical era and no prior experience with the game system. 🐎 Battlefield Geometry, Mission Command, Deception, and Maneuver. A well-led cavalry squadron was able to independently detach from the main body and provide me depth on the battlefield my maneuvering quickly toward the enemy's rear while being masked by terrain. This diversion enabled me to tie down more than half of his combat power into an unfavorable canalizing position to provide the time and space for the rest of my forces to come into position against a more favorable enemy frontage. 💣 Combined Arms and Technological Standoff. Cannon was positioned with clear sight lines to enemy strong points and at an angle to maximize support to the forward marching infantry. The formation maneuverability and superior weapons range of my Rifle Regiment enabled me to secure key terrain early and attrite the enemy frontage from the flank. Although the Congreve Rockets of the Royal Horse Artillery were not reliable, I put them in in a position to achieve the highest probability of impact against the enemy, the first being the enemy's underestimation of their utility [he chose to target my Highlander infantry and not the Rockets]. ⚔ Visualizing the Battlespace Framework, Flexibility, and Exploiting Success. I always tried to visualize at least three steps ahead to understand what successive and cumulative actions needed to be executed rather than reacting turn by turn from the enemy. This allowed me to sequence actions to allow my slower moving infantry and cannon to get into position. And this also included positioning my best Heavy Cavalry on the opposite flank to strike at an opportune moment and provide flexibility.
