Given what happened with #unity3d this year, it really shook the #gamedev community. It felt like the community was betrayed. So what's next? 🤔 In my professional opinion, the next move is not necessarily to abandon #unity entirely. 🧐 It's still a very feature rich engine and has a ton of supported platforms. Of course like any other engine it has it's quirks, faulty support, missing documentation and so on. But it's still super accessible, runs on a toaster and let's you get started making games in no time. 👍 All that said, what this move from Unity showed #gamedevelopers is that we shouldn't put all of our eggs in one basket. 🥚 Something that we intuitively know, but have kind of forgotten. We need to branch out. To that end, I've included a couple of engines I'm gonna look into below 👇 ⭐#unrealengine - This was to be expected. It's a huge Unity competitor and yet not, because both engines aim for different audiences with some overlap. ⭐#defold - I hear good things about this engine for 2D and some 3D. And engines I'm keeping an eye on for now: ❓ #hazelengine - It seems promising but is still only available through Patreon Support. I'll wait and see. ❓ #godotengine - This might come as a surprise but I'm currently not convinced Godot is the way to go. It's improving over time though so we'll see where it lands. ❓ #stride3d - This engine has promise as a Unity replacement, although development seems to be somewhat slow. 3D only. ❓ #flaxengine - This engine is an interesting mix of Unity, Unreal and Godot. It has a lot of potential, but currently isn't production ready. 3D only. I'm happy to share that I've obtained another new credential: Unreal Educator Accelerator! (I received this one late for whatever reason, but better late than never.) I had earned this credential prior to working with insight2execution to organize professional development opportunities for middle and high school educators interested in incorporating use of Unreal Engine, Fortnite Creative, and Twinmotion into the classroom. i2e unfortunately no longer offers professional development in those areas, but I would certainly be #opentowork for other organizations that are exploring those arenas. Students learn so much from game design and working with interactive 3d technologies, and it would be terrific to be a part of an organization that equips educators with the tools they need in order to expand upon those learning opportunities. #unrealengine #twinmotion #fortnite #uefn #fortnitecreative #interactive3d #jobseeker

This project has been a fantastic journey, allowing me to explore and implement various aspects of game development. I've created everything from character movement and mechanics to intricate level design and engaging gameplay. The experience has been incredibly rewarding, and I've learned so much along the way. Recently, I had the privilege of engaging in an in-depth conversation with a senior game designer involved in the development of an upcoming open-world fantasy game. As an aspiring game design and development scholar, this discussion not only offered valuable insights into the daily tasks and responsibilities of a game designer but also prompted a thoughtful reflection on their journey of entering the field of game development. During our discussion, we delved into the recurring "paradox" often faced when entering professional fields across various industries. Much like other disciplines where gaining experience is a prerequisite for obtaining experience, game design requires the creation of a game to truly understand the craft. However, this requirement extends further when transitioning into a professional environment. While the foundational knowledge acquired through college courses is invaluable, it differs significantly from the practical experience gained while working on a team within the industry. The developer emphasized the importance of team collaboration, referring to it as an aspect they wished they had experienced during the earlier stages of their career. The value derived from working on team projects is immeasurable, as it sprouts not only practical and technical skills, but also communication and problem-solving abilities. Consequently, even developers with impressive resumes and portfolios may find themselves overlooked for positions if they lack effective collaboration and communication skills, despite demonstrating clear proficiency in game design concepts. In conclusion, while academic training provides a solid foundation, true mastery in game design often comes from hands-on experience through collaborative team environments. Therefore, aspiring game designers should seek opportunities to engage in team-based projects to further cultivate the diverse skill sets required for success in entering the industry. *Volume Warning* 😅 I have a job interview coming up tomorrow regarding teaching game development to kids and I decided far too late to try something a bit crazy and come up with a new game to show in my next interview. 👦👧 I already had Echo's Last Stand, which used Unreal Engine and was a pretty complex game. I wanted something that seemed more simple for kids starting up in game development and using Unity. 🐤 Since my interview is tomorrow, I only had one day to cook something up, so I came up with my own modern take on Flappy Bird. 💧 I decided to add a bit of rain into the mix, a couple of sounds, but wanted to really add something that set it apart from the Flappy Bird we all know and love (or hate for raging reasons). 💥 I decided to make that difference known in the death animation. My plan for getting into games was not perfect. Here’s my story summed up.   I wanted to work in games as a gameplay programmer and not I.T. anymore as I had previously thought.   I made sure that it was a possibility to get remote jobs in this industry and made sure this career path could hit my financial goals.   I checked to see what education paths were available.   I decided on the self-taught route.   I decided I wanted to learn how to make games with Unity specifically.   I took Unity’s official courses and different courses I picked up over the course of 9 months. Never applied to a single job.   Month 9, had completed my first game jam which gave me my first large wind of confidence.   Month 9, joined a bootcamp for help with the job search and to have community.   Month 12, with the help of the bootcamp (GameDevHQ btw), and my own ability to stick to a plan and get better at networking every day I landed a job at month 12 working on enterprise VR/AR/Desktop apps as a Unity developer, almost exactly 1 year since starting my journey.   Not to mention, I felt sucky at programming till about 1.5 years into this journey. I sucked at networking for a few months before I buckled down and took it seriously. I sucked at interviews till I didn’t. I had a terrible resume till about 2.5 years into this journey. My portfolio is mainly course related projects meaning not a super cool portfolio. And the other handful of things that made this journey difficult.   Oh yeah, I bought my first home, was having my 3rd kid, kept up on my exercise routine, and more.   AND it was a very enjoyable journey. I took my time and loved the process.   There’s my story summed up.   It can be hard. If you let it be. I could have landed a job 6 months sooner if I wanted.
