The biggest concern with 𝒕𝙪𝒓𝙩𝒍𝙚𝒔 𝒂𝙣𝒅 𝒍𝙞𝒈𝙝𝒕𝙞𝒏𝙜 is for sea turtles nesting on beaches. 𝑨𝙧𝒕𝙞𝒇𝙞𝒄𝙞𝒂𝙡 𝙡𝒊𝙜𝒉𝙩𝒔 𝒄𝙖𝒏 𝒄𝙤𝒏𝙛𝒖𝙨𝒆 𝒉𝙖𝒕𝙘𝒉𝙡𝒊𝙣𝒈𝙨, who instinctively use the moon and starlight to navigate towards the ocean. 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒆'𝒔 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎: 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Bright lights, especially white light with a lot of blue in it, can disorient baby sea turtles. They may crawl inland instead of towards the sea, putting them at risk of exhaustion, dehydration, and predators. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Adult female sea turtles may avoid nesting on beaches bathed in artificial light altogether. To protect sea turtles, there's a movement towards "turtle-friendly lighting" on beaches. Here are some key points: 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿: Amber, orange, and red LED lights are less disruptive to turtles than white light. These colors have a longer wavelength that sea turtles can see less well. 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Lights should be shielded so that light isn't going up into the sky or out towards the beach. This means using fixtures that direct light downwards. 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀: Only use as much light as necessary. Brighter lights are more likely to confuse hatchlings. If you live near a beach or are visiting one, there are things you can do to help: 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 if your accommodation overlooks the beach. Turn off unnecessary lights that face the beach. Be mindful of 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀 on the beach at night, and 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 them near nesting sites. There is so much we can learn from building projects and styles across countries. Take below project we completed in Spain. Together with SKREINSTUDIOS we were able to really optimise the passive, construction elements of the buildings such as thick, insulated walls. This massively increased the thermal mass of the building which keeps the building warm during winter and cool during summer. It enabled us to create a sustainable and comfortable villa with a very simple and sustainable climate installation. In the Netherlands we increasingly see the development of lightweight structures. Great for lowering the environmental footprint of the building, but it also creates a risk of lacking thermal mass and thereby heating up more quickly in summer and cooling down more quickly in winter. In those instances we need more energy to heat and cool the building. At Climetric Sustainable Design Strategies we apply parametric analysis to find the optimal combination of lightweight structures with passive and sustainable materials to increase thermal mass, for instance hempcrete, bio-based insulation or phase change materials.
