Logos, colors, fonts, websites, copy, offers, packages, products, social media, Facebook ads, billboards... 😅 It's almost enough to give me a nervous breakdown at times! But it's not that complicated. 🙃 This is the simple secret to brand building. Be clear on your promise to the market, and work to deliver on that promise. You don't need to overdeliver, and you don't need to underpromise. It's fair exchange. Offer the promise, and then deliver. I just interviewed Ryan from CarMax about his experience with marketing while working in automotive sales. Here’s a quick summary:

In your opinion, what is the most important step in the sales process? For me, it was always FACT FINDING. I could never sell anything without knowing the customers hot / cold button, wants and needs. Sell the sizzle! Also, TRIAL CLOSE. After every single test drive. I asked one question. “Is this the vehicle you see yourself taking home “TODAY?” That one question told me everything and if the answer was anything but YES, I circled back to the customers answers I learned from fact finding to figure out why the answer is not a YES. I started on the line 18 years ago and I’ll never forget the sales process framed on the wall in the sales office at Menlo Mazda. From selling $15,000 Mazda 3’s to $500,000 Rolls Royce Phantoms, my process never changed. I don’t think it is emphasized enough today that the car is sold OUTSIDE. Though every step is important and not to be skipped, in your opinion,what is the most important step?

Has this situation ever happened to you in automotive sales? How do you handle customers that creep through your lot? At the very least, you need to get a conversation started. And, we've found that approaching buyers on their trade is a great way to get them out of their vehicle and started through the sales process.

Me: Hey Mr Manufacturer… I can help you sell more. Them: But we don’t have a sales department. Me: Spooky right. The first time I had that conversation…we were both surprised. Me a bit more than them to be honest, but that was a long time ago. Moving through their system/funnel from inbound lead to PO felt just the same…with or without a sales department. Every sale has a start, a middle and an end. And a ton of obstacles along the way. Some obstacles you can go round, some you can step over, some you can eliminate…but every sales process has obstacles. That’s why the question I get the most information from…and YOU can get most from too in your own manufacturing/engineering business is this one: “What obstacles are preventing you from making 2x or 3 x more than you do now?” Listen closely now. As a recovering engineer I fell in to sales But fell in love with the process. The idea of building and developing relationships based on curiosity and solving problems has always been the best part of sales for me. After going to Western Michigan University for Engineering, never would I have thought I would end up in sales, but wouldn’t change it for the world. Are you where you thought you would be?
