SUSTAINABILITY: Frankfurt Airport modernizes ground power units Airport operator Fraport AG has begun an overhaul of its diesel ground power supply units at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in #Germany with a €215,000 (US$231,000) grant from the ground power directive funding program operated by the German Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport . Christoph Schiller, project manager of #Fraport’s asset management team for central #infrastructure, explained, “The first aim is to connect those parking positions that do not yet have a stationary ground power connection to the electric grid. But to achieve this, major excavation works are necessary. These need to take place during ongoing operations. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is already a clean airport, but PortsToronto sees the opportunity for even better performance. Being the first Airport to be 100% powered by renewables from Bullfrog Power to being the first Airport in Canada to use fluorine free fire fighting foam, and the first operator of a 100% battery powered ferry (charged from those renewables!), Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport stands tall on the global stage. But we need to do more. As one #Toronto Councillor recently pointed out, while the Airport is clean, aviation has work to do. And that’s why we need two things. One is to incubate manufacturers like Joby (article below) who recently completed a 500+ mile journey on hydrogen where the only emission was water. Water! How impactful would that be at our Island Airport? This is a huge step forward in transforming aviation emissions and one in which we want to participate. The second thing we need is a renewed Tripartite Agreement. Without a modernized Agreement, the Airport cannot contribute positively to Toronto’s and Canada’s sustainability goals. Transition to Electric Ground Power Units (GPUs) As part of the modernization efforts, Fraport is prioritizing the installation of ground power connections at more aircraft parking positions. These connections will facilitate the use of electric ground power units (e-GPUs) instead of traditional diesel-powered units. As an aviation enthusiast, I'm particularly interested in the challenge of reducing the carbon footprint of airports. The fact that it requires a multi-pronged approach, including replacing old infrastructure, retrofitting existing facilities, and building new sustainable ones, is truly complex. But the real head-scratcher is: how do we manage such large-scale change with such intricate infrastructure?

✈ As global air travel recovers post covid, then grows, plus electrification becomes a key part of decarbonization efforts, the demand on power grids is intensifying. A recent study from Enterprise Mobility, Xcel Energy and Jacobs into power infrastructure for airports raises awareness of the significant utility power infrastructure investments and timing needed to support electrification in airport ecosystems. From this research, #OurJacobs Global Market Solutions Director for Aviation, Cheryl McNall, shares her 3️⃣ lessons for European airports. "There is no transition without transmission" 2. More than 30% of electricity demand at the "airport" is outside the actual airport - the wider ecosystem around the airport is critical and shares the grid utility. 3. Micro grids/Campus energy systems are important BUT they only really buy you time - you will need to upgrade the grid. 4. Significant grid upgrades can take 10yrs....... so start NOW with a "low-regrets"/"least regrets" strategy. 5. This is bigger than the airport and their own #masterplan. 6. Airports have a significant #GDP input into the economy - making this a #treasury, #energy & #transport JOINT issue (needing a joint response). 7. This is not an EV/Rental car issue - they are simply the #canaryinthecoalmine for this issue. 8.
