🎖 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗢𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀! (...𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳) Four London Gatwick colleagues had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run the Olympic Marathon, only a few hours before the official race last weekend. Austen Symons, Chirag Patel, Helen Gittens and Simon Burrows were lucky to be picked as part of a ballot for all colleagues in the VINCI network. As well as this unique experience in the centre of Paris, the runners cemented their place in history, as this was the first non-competitive event in the Games' history. A huge congratulations to our London Gatwick runners, and to everyone else involved in making #Paris2024 such a thrilling few weeks.

If you're into sustainable transport & major event planning and lamenting the end of the Paris 2024 Olympics here's a great discussion piece about some very bold assertions from the organisers of LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games. The question may not be about whether the Olympics can do it - in terms of ensuring the transport infrastructure is in place in time - but more about whether there is sufficient time to influence the mind-set of the "car dominant" spectator so they feel confident enough to change the habit of a lifetime.... it's going to be a roller coaster for sure! #sustainabletravel #influencingtravelbehaviour #demandmanagement

This first post Paris Olympics week is still carrying the buzz of excitement and inspiration! What was it about this Olympics that had many of us at hello?! Paris’ historic beauty is undeniable. In collaboration with the greatest sporting event on this planet, it was the first Olympics with full gender parity and delivered across 32 sports many magnificent moments, heartbreaking defeats, moving stories of the athlete’s pilgrimage to get there, fun entertainment (Snoop Dogg did not disappoint!), excellent “play by play” coverage and unity. For all of the upheaval in various parts of the world, the ability of the global sports communities to come together in respect and support, even in the throes of intense competition, was a master class in how to do it. -Lift one another up and celebrate the achievements -Learn from the experiences -Recognize the generations of Olympic athletes who came before and paved the way to be better, along with the competitors who pushed the level of performances to the highest and best in the moment -Appreciate all of it and the village of people who were an integral part of the journey While there were issues; some that could be quickly addressed and resolved, some that required an alternate plan and others that are still smarting from a questionable decision, the 2024 Paris Olympic Games captured our heart's and broke many records. #ParisOlympics #WaytogoUSA #lovewhatyoudo #teamwork #healthandwellbeing #LA2028

Major sporting events are merging one into another in the Global north, providing ongoing challenges to #urban #sustainability. After the final of the Euro 2024 football championship and the finals weekend at Wimbledon, the end of July 2024 will herald the launch of the Olympics in Paris. One research into 16 past events found that their sustainability score had deteriorated over time. Indeed the winners of the gold, silver and bronze medals (and the other ones to score well above 50) were quite dated: Salt Lake City (2202), Albertville (1992) and Barcelona (1992), respectively. Looking ahead, in an idealised world cities should be made to compete to show which can deliver the most sustainable Olympics, thus earning a genuine gold. At the moment, Olympic events win pewter, rather than gold medals for sustainability. https://wix.to/NeO17v3

The 3 values of Olympism are (1) excellence, (2) respect and (3) friendship. They constitute the foundation on which the Olympic movement builds its activities to promote sport, culture and education with a view to building a better world. Over the next 18 days, around 10,500 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), not countries will compete in 329 events in 32 different sports at the 33rd Summer Olympics 2024 @ Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024. Some interesting FIRSTs of the Paris Olympics 2024: - Unlike all other Olympics Games, the Opening Ceremony will be held along the 4-mile route on the lower & upper quays of the Seine River instead of in a stadium, with athletes parading on boats representing their nations. - Unlike previous Olympic mascots like pandas, bears or tigers, the official mascot for Paris Olympics is an Olympic Phryge, a traditional hat that was once worn by French revolutionaries, symbolizing freedom. - 1st Olympics fully aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement, aiming to reduce carbon footprint by 55%. A good example is the use existing & temporary venues, rather than constructing new ones. - A new concept of mass participation events will be introduced, where the public can join the athletes in running, cycling & rowing. - Each Olympic medal will be infused with 18 grams of iron from the original Eiffel Tower, which was built for the 1889 World’s Fair. - A new sport will be introduced: Breaking aka Breakdancing. Ouvrons grand les Jeux or "Games Wide Open"! #ParisOlympics2024 #GeorgyChanPosts

Could Dublin Host the Olympics??? As the Paris 2024 games draw to a close, I was having a conversation with someone about could Dublin pull off hosting the 2036 Olympics. I was promptly told I might be dreaming too big on this one… Let's be honest, the Olympics is no small feat. It is a logistical marathon, a financial steeplechase, and a public relations decathlon all rolled into one. But if any city could pull it off with a blend of determination and craic, it's Dublin. We've seen the transformative power of the Olympics firsthand. Barcelona's stunning waterfront and London's regeneration are testaments to the games' ability to reshape a city. Imagine a Dublin where world-class stadiums, transport infrastructure & and housing could be provided in one clean sweep and within 12 years. A Dublin Olympics could be the catalyst for the City Edge project which like the London 2012 location, could speed up unlocking the potential of the grand canal, existing transport infrastructure and creating a new landbank for large swathes of housing inside the M50, creating a vibrant, sustainable, and accessible location for everyone. Is it time to repurpose this part of the city sooner rather than later? Of course, I am not naïve having worked in the delivery of new homes in the midst of a housing emergency, there are challenges. Infrastructure, accommodation, and the dreaded traffic are just a few hurdles to overcome. But I genuinely believe with careful planning and ingenuity, we can turn these obstacles into opportunities. So, could Dublin host the Olympics? I believe it could and be the catalyst that Dublin needs to give the city a major overhaul. I believe it is a question that deserves consideration. What do you think? Could Dublin be an Olympic champion? Could Ireland have the Desire and belief to pull it off? #Dublin2036 #Olympics #CityEdge #Development #Transformation Dublin City Council South Dublin County Council Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council Sport Ireland Sport Ireland Campus Olympic Federation of Ireland Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) GAA Football Association of Ireland Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) Athletics Ireland Swim Ireland
