5 Super Common Myths About Therapists! 1. They CAN'T Read Your Mind: What they can do is HEAR your story and take psychologically informed guesses at what is unsaid by you or is even unconscious. Their education and training allows them to SEE what common people can't and help you understand yourself on a deeper level. They are trained to read what is not being explicitly said. They can help the client become AWARE of things that they are often unconscious of or have a subconscious understanding of. 2. Therapists Do Struggle With Mental Health Issues: To think that they don't is like saying that a doctor can't fall sick, of course they can. Guess what? I am a therapist in training and I struggle with anxiety and OCD. And I know soooo many therapists who struggle with so many mental health issues too. Your therapist is a HUMAN before being a therapist. 3. Therapists Don’t NEED Therapy: Okay can a dentist fix their teeth themselves? Nope. As therapists we are better equipped to understand our emotions and self-regulate but we NEED support too. In fact, mental health professionals are encouraged to take therapy themselves because of the emotional labour they do in their work everyday and also to ensure that they are aware of their own issues so that they do not project those onto their clients. I am a therapist in therapy myself. 4. They CAN Get Angry And They Are Not In THERAPIST-Y MODE All The Time: Nope we are not always ZEN, calm and composed. We feel a breadth of emotions and we are people who are allowed to express all our range of emotions outside our therapy room. Humans before being therapists :) 5. They DO NOT Have All Their Mess Sorted: Ha! This is a big one. People often think that since we are therapists, we have all our shit sorted. Nope, not really. Like everyone else, we struggle in our daily lives too. Our training may allow us to navigate our emotional and interpersonal issues in a relatively healthy way (not always) but that does not mean that everything in our lives is sorted. We face issues in our personal lives just like everyone else does 🤗 #therapistsofinstagram #humanisetherapists #therapyworks #emotionallabour https://lnkd.in/dFs3rncg
