George Washington Carver? Harriet Tubman? Jane Goodall? Malala Yousafzai? Marie Curie? Marsha P. Johnson? Martin Luther King? Neil deGrasse Tyson? Oprah Winfrey? Ruth Bader Ginsberg? Sally Ride? All of these people...and SO MANY MORE...stood up for the rights of marginalized communities, had accomplishments that were significant those marginalized communities, and/or made breakthroughs that made the world better for all of us. This is why we need DEI - so we create and continually maintain environments that encourage and promote ingenuity, kindness, inclusion, and innovation. These wonderful things are only possible when we're able to share experiences, as well as hear and amplify voices from different cultures and backgrounds. Let's listen to each other and collaborate. When I think of America, I think of opportunities, hard work, diverse opinions, and a rich, varied society that thrives on the freedom to express beliefs and take action. However, not every citizen experiences these freedoms equally. Many have had to fight very hard, and most are still fighting for their equal rights. The greatness of this country lies in its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. These principles help all of us who have felt like outsiders feel a sense of belonging to the idea of what America represents. This sense of unity comes from the ability to hear and respect diverse thoughts, beliefs, and experiences. As we celebrate our Independence Day, a day that was also born out of division and struggle, I want to look forward to how we can continue to unify as a country and one way is through developing emotional intelligence with recognition of unconscious bias along with building cultural awareness. Working towards building equitable policies that embrace everyone’s brilliance, thoughts, and values creates cultures that welcome inclusivity. Rather than promoting a "might is right" mentality, enabling an environment of true belonging helps societies thrive and cultivate mutual respect. Today, on Juneteenth, we pause to reflect on the profound significance of freedom and the relentless pursuit of equality. This day not only marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the US, but also reminds us of the ongoing struggles for justice and equity worldwide. In this moment of reflection, I feel deeply moved to honor the legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois, a pioneering scholar, activist, and a foundational figure of the civil rights movement. Du Bois championed a vision of democracy and equality that transcended national borders, advocating for democracy, economic and political equality that is universally accessible, irrespective or race or geography. Du Bois taught us that the quest for equality spans across organizations, nations, or eras, it’s a collective and enduring effort. His insights into the interconnectedness and interdependence of these global struggles continue to inspire those committed to these causes today; and his steadfast belief in a world where everyone can thrive and fully participate in a democratic process and equitable society serves to guide us in our actions. As we observe Juneteenth, let us embrace the lessons of our past, and renew our commitment to the future – a future where freedom and equality are realities enjoyed by all. 

The ongoing backlash to DEI is the same backlash that existed for critical race theory. Which is the same backlash to Obama’s election. Which is the same backlash any time anyone other than a rich white man succeeds in a field that is perceived as “out of their lane,” so to speak. For me, someone who’s working to get autistic people hired, there’s a very real perception that we’re either math-inclined computer geniuses or are only able to work at minimum wage jobs which anyone can do. You see how narrow a definition that is? You see how most people (including most autistic people, like me) don’t neatly fit in that first box, and how little power the second box gives us? This isn’t really about companies “forcing diversity.” It isn’t about banning people from certain jobs. It’s about power, who is allowed to have it, and what they’re able to do with that power. That’s always what it’s been. What’s really silly about all of this hullabaloo is how it’s such a bad move on almost all levels, and it will only get worse! The global marketplace and interconnected world will only make DEI work more necessary, and there’s ample evidence that companies who truly invest in their workforce like this actually perform better quality work for longer amd are less burnt out and/or likely to quit! I say when I’m training workplaces about autism that properly accommodating autistic people in general benefits everyone in the arrangement. People sometimes look at me weird when I say that, but it’s true! Businesses win by getting skilled and loyal employees who can be more productive than their neurotypical counterparts, the other workers get a new perspective on their work and in their lives, the autistic worker gets paid and doesn’t need to take as many government benefits, and lastly me and my company win by our ongoing retainer. There’s so many ways to do work, and many that are better than what we currently do as a society. Why would you limit yourself to a worse way because a small bunch of loud and obnoxious people don’t want you to?

Honoring Juneteenth is important for several reasons: Recognition of African American History and Culture: Juneteenth celebrates the rich cultural heritage and significant contributions of African Americans to the fabric of American society. It is a time to honor the resilience, creativity, and enduring spirit of those who were enslaved and their descendants. Education and Awareness: Juneteenth serves as a platform for educating people about the history of slavery, the Civil War, and the struggle for civil rights. By understanding this history, we can better appreciate the progress made and recognize the work that still needs to be done to achieve true equality. Reflection and Healing: The day provides an opportunity for reflection on the injustices of the past and their lasting impacts on society. It is a time for healing, dialogue, and fostering a more inclusive and understanding community. Celebration of Freedom and Progress: Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom—the fundamental right of every individual. It acknowledges the progress made since 1865 and encourages ongoing efforts to dismantle systemic racism and promote equality.
