Are we afraid of looking complacent? Or do we believe that we don't deserve it? Regardless of the reasons, it's important to reframe the way we think about celebrating our successes. It's not about just showing off our victories, but taking a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work and effort that we invested in it. It's like taking a deep breath before the next big leap. And don't just celebrate the big things. Celebrate the small wins, too. Even if it's just getting out of bed on time or finishing a task that you've been procrastinating on. Success comes in different sizes, and they all deserve a good cheer. I used to loathe when people wanted to celebrate small wins at work. I felt that if the threshold for celebration gets too low, you end up celebrating more than you work and that it cheapens the celebration for big things. I've changed my mind. In truth, I still don't celebrate my small wins, but I've learned to love celebrating the minor victories of others. Why? It's all about expectations. People expect to celebrate and be celebrated at major milestones and it can be tougher to exceed expectations in those moments. But when you are observant enough to make someone feel special after a minor victory, you ALWAYS exceed expectations and it creates some pretty special moments with your team. So push a snack cart around after your finance team has finished tax season and write the personalized card for the person who nailed their presentation. Life's better when you do.
