Hello fellow Coogs and engineering students! I attended the University of Houston Engineering Career Fair on Wednesday, February 7 and learned valuable information about securing potential jobs in the industry. Let me share some advice from the recruiters I spoke with: 1. Understand the specifics of the position you're applying for and vocalize which industries you're most passionate about. Large engineering companies offer a variety of services, so do your research beforehand to check if their open roles align with your interests. Companies want to put you in an environment where you'll succeed; let them know which office location you'd prefer and ask about potential mentorship programs to help you with the transition. 2. Be prepared to answer questions about your resume. If you put any previous work experience, projects, or skills on your resume be ready to explain their relevance. Keep your resume up to date and treat it as a living document that represents where you currently are in your career. 3. Treat the career fair as a networking event and focus on asking questions. Come prepared with a list of introductory questions about company culture, the recruiter's experiences/projects with the company, and professional development opportunities. If this is your first career fair, focus on understanding what recruiters are looking for when considering candidates. Make observations on what constitutes successful body language and introductions. 4. Follow up with employers after the career fair. You will inevitably end up with a pile of business cards, flyers, and company swag, so send a thank you email. Tell recruiters you appreciated talking with them and outline the steps you're taking to become a member of their company. Applying online is virtually a must at every single company, so check company websites for potential deadlines and important company language/requirements. Hope these tips help. With internship applications beginning to open, it's important to highlight one of the most important places you can discover internships like mine at TD – career fairs! As a matter of fact, I discovered TD at Clemson University's career fair. Navigating career fairs is very similar to navigating the interview process. When I went to Clemson University's career fair, I researched the companies that were going to be there and their available internship positions. I prepared my elevator pitch and made sure that I was ready to answer any questions that I was asked during the career fair. I made sure to arrive in business professional dress and to have multiple printed copies of my resume so I could physically give one to each company's recruiter. Some companies will also have a QR code to scan to upload your resume in a digital format, so I made sure to have a copy available on my phone as well. For my peers at Clemson University, TD Bank will be returning on September 12, 2024 to Clemson University's career fair! Speaking as a student who learned about TD's internship opportunities at our career fair, went through the interview process, and have nearly completed the internship program, I cannot recommend attending the career fair enough. Tips to Stand Out at a Career Fair - Perfect Your Elevator Pitch: Prepare a concise and compelling introduction about yourself. Highlight your skills, experiences, and what you’re looking for in an internship. - Bring Your Resume: Have multiple copies of your updated resume ready. Ensure it’s tailored to the roles you’re interested in, showcasing relevant skills and experiences. If you don't have past internships, include past relevant projects. - Ask Thoughtful Questions: Engage with us, and ask us real, insightful questions about the company, culture, growth opportunities, and specific roles. This demonstrates your enthusiasm and preparedness. Bonus points if you have already done your research about the company and can drop a few knowledge points. - Apply for the Internship: If you are interested in joining, apply to the internship following the career fair. Your eagerness speaks volumes about your work ethic. - Follow Up: After the fair, reach out to us on LinkedIn, and mention something specific from our conversation to jog our memory. Meet Srividhya Pattabiraman (Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences, UMass Amherst MS ‘24) who has time and again used career fairs to network with employers to gain internship and full-time opportunities. She was a Data Science Intern at Eversource this past summer and is currently doing a co-op with them. She has worked on projects such as capturing power savings by implementing time series forecasting, as well as detecting defects in distribution lines using computer vision algorithms. Here are some of her insights about networking at career fairs: “Think of career fairs as a way to expand your network. Filter companies based on interest, research open opportunities, and tailor your approach. Leave a lasting impression on representatives by developing a pitch for each role and customizing your resume. If they are open to it, connect with them on LinkedIn. Last year, this approach resulted in a positive interaction with a senior manager from Eversource at a career fair. Despite no immediate openings, he reached out in April with an internship opportunity. After another networking event, an HR connection at AspenTech advocated for me with a hiring manager, securing an interview with the firm. Both my internship and full-time opportunities originated from my proactive engagement at career fairs. It's "Super Bowl" week! (No, not THAT Super Bowl. 🏈😉) This is the week the FSU Career Center hosts our two largest career fairs, a huge resume-critiquing event with representatives from a variety of industries, and two full days of post-career fair interviews with recruiters. Whether it's a first-year student coming to a fair just to see what it's like, a student looking for an internship to gain experience, or graduating student who is seeking their next destination, this week is all about connections. Students might connect with a company they've never heard of before and be completely "wowed". A recruiter who's never visited FSU might be so impressed with our students that they want to build their brand and create a talent pipeline.
