We’re calling all Australia & New Zealand Si Network members to share your greatest (regional) environmental challenge; – What is it in your world, or your work that needs innovating? – Is it reducing carbon emissions, reducing waste, or something wickeder? – Do you have an environmental innovation underway that you’d like to test with a group of passionate practitioners? – Have you seen a poignant discussion (article) in our region that you think needs attention? Our third and final Spring Series event in November seeks to explore how we might address a real-life environmental problem. We’d welcome all expressions of interest where we might explore yours, or one you're close to. Either jot a few thoughts, or link, in the comments below – or drop Kate or any of the Au/NZ Si Hub core team your thinking. #AuNZ #ComplexityScience #EcoSystemsBuilding #Ethnography #EventPlanning #HCD #HumanCentredDesign #Mapping #SystemsInnovation #SiHub #SystemsEnquiry #SystemsThinking #TransitionDesign #Sustainability #SystemsModelling #SystemsTheory #SystemsLeadership #ValueEntrepreneurship #ValueNetworks #WickedProblems #Regeneration #RegenerativeSystems #RegenerativeInnovation #Environment #ClimateChange #ParisAgreement #SDG #Sustainability #Circularity

This is 100% truth and powerful, "The concept of development must be expanded to include topics other than the economy, and to feature these other topics, and thus answer questions such as how a system can function if responsible states are not required to carry the burdens of degradation. Topics include investment in clean industries, trade in green goods and agricultural products, intellectual property rights, traditional knowledge, technology transfer, emerging technologies such as big data, climate disruption, energy security, food security, conservation of biodiversity, environmental restoration, development aid and trade facilitation." A great article was published last week in Nature saying that environmental scientists bring a crucial skill set to the corporate sector! - Formerly overseen by generalists, sustainability or ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) reporting, along with the business transformations it entails, now requires a more specialized skill set bridging environmental impact and business performance. - Conventional corporate expertise might fall short in meeting the increasing regulatory and stakeholder demands. Instead, trained environmental scientists — who offer a blend of scientific proficiency with corporate adaptability — are required; their skill set helps to prevent greenwashing and enables businesses to implement best practices based on scientific evidence. Happy to share our latest comment in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, written with my brilliant colleagues, Daiane Faller, Dr. Mathilde Erfurt, Tracy Lane, Josh Hasdell, and Jane Eva Collins. Drawing upon our sustainability consulting experience, we highlight the unprecedented demand for environmental science expertise in the corporate sector. This trend will lead to new synergies between business, academia, and universities, create many alternative career opportunities for environmental scientists, and positively transform business practices and society. Exciting times! Happy reading, and we're curious to hear your feedback and opinion! We have come a long way. It is critical to understand the general themes we talk about whenever we meet to exchange ideas. Natural capital to me, involves a greater emphasis and respect for nature as our primary source of all economic engines. Half of the world's GDP is heavily dependent on nature. Our health and well-being are mostly dependent on nature. With so much at stake, you would have thought we would have come together to take care of it earlier. It is no longer "somebody else's" problem; the buck stops with us. Do you agree? #NaturalCapital #SoilHealth #MetaGood #GSFN #Sustainability #planetaryboundaries #donuteconomics #naturebasedsolution #circularity #ecosystems #soilandland #water #climate #biodiversity #pollution #SDGs #ScienceBasedTargets
Natural Capital Thinking 🌎 The intersection of ecological considerations and economic planning is a critical focus in today’s corporate and policy-making landscapes. Key environmental themes such as water resources, soil and land integrity, climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and pollution management are becoming integral to operational strategies. These are anchored in innovative economic frameworks like Doughnut Economics, which seek to balance human development with planetary health. Nature-Based Solutions and the principles of Planetary Boundaries are reshaping the approach to sustainability, urging for a symbiotic relationship between human activities and the natural world. These ideas are reinforced by ambitious global targets like the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement, which provide a shared direction for international efforts. Precision tools such as Life Cycle Assessment, True Cost Accounting, and Footprinting offer a detailed understanding of environmental impacts, essential for informed decision-making. This data-driven approach is crucial for aligning business practices with ecological imperatives. Certification schemes and reporting standards such as ISO and Fairtrade introduce an element of accountability, ensuring that environmental stewardship is not just a promise but a measurable, verifiable practice. They play a pivotal role in maintaining the credibility of sustainability initiatives. The incorporation of these components into day-to-day business operations signifies an important shift in how industries perceive and interact with natural capital. It reflects a broader recognition that long-term economic stability is inextricably linked to the health of the planet’s ecosystems. This evolution in thinking charts a path forward that respects both the limits of natural resources and the necessity for economic activity. It’s a path marked by continuous learning, adaptation, and a commitment to balancing ecological integrity with the demands of a dynamic economy.
