It was great to sit down with Transport for NSW Secretary Josh Murray to discuss our delivery priorities for the year ahead. Amid changes to TfNSW’s operating model, diversification of our capital program and productivity challenges facing the sector – it’s a busy time for us. In coming months we’ll be starting a conversation with industry aimed at creating more opportunities around innovation. While innovation happens on our project sites every day, we think by working closely with industry we can apply new initiatives at scale and help improve productivity. Today, I engaged in a fascinating discussion about the parallels and contrasts between railway infrastructure access in the United Kingdom and mainland Europe. Despite being cognizant of the imminent General Elections in the U.K., it's only now that I've fully grasped the profound impact this event could have on the U.K.'s railway industry. Rewind thirty years, the U.K. was at the forefront of railway privatization, a pioneer in the separation between Infrastructure Management and Railway Operation. The potential shifts in the U.K.'s political landscape, coupled with its independence from the European Union, could pave the way for a comprehensive re-nationalization and re-integration of its railways. While I firmly believe that competition has been a catalyst for growth in railways across Europe over the past two decades, I remain neutral on the pros and cons of this development in the future. I am curious to observe the railway industry's upcoming trajectory in Great Britain. Will a fully integrated railway system outperform the current model? The unfolding of these events promises to be intriguing.

Yesterday marked a significant milestone with the release of our 5-year Refresh of the Blueprint for Regional Mobility—the region’s first employer-led agenda dedicated to improving mobility networks from Baltimore to Richmond. This refresh, building on the progress and changes since the original Blueprint’s 2018 release, will steer our collective efforts over the next five years to foster an equitable, innovative, and seamless transportation network.   We appreciate the engaged leadership and dedication of Ken Samet at MedStar Health, Robert Blue at Dominion Energy, and Mark Weinberger, who serve as chairs of our Regional Mobility and Infrastructure Committee. Their commitment to creating reliable, safe, and highly connected transportation and infrastructure is positioning us for global competitiveness as a region, a community of companies and organizations, residents, and transformative investments. A special thank you to all our board partners who have been instrumental in championing regional mobility and infrastructure investments as a driver of economic competitiveness. Your leadership has been pivotal in identifying and advancing these priorities. Additionally, heartfelt thanks to the more than 100 regional stakeholders who provided invaluable input during the Refresh process.   Together, we are shaping a future where our mobility networks support thriving communities and robust economic growth. A year ago, Network Rail CEO Andrew Haines said, “Britain’s railways are not fit for purpose”. While we’re proud to drive continued improvements through our work with major operators at WCL, we agree that system wide reform is sorely needed. Fortunately, the light at the end of the tunnel is closer than ever. The Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Bill has been introduced to Parliament through the King’s Speech, paving the way for major change. Bringing track and train under one management umbrella is critical to tackling inefficiency at its root. Most importantly, it will get investment flowing outwards from the main lines, unlocking new transport opportunities and driving up service quality in all parts of the country. With longer investment horizons and connected decision making, we can finally turn system-wide ‘integration’ and ‘efficiency’ from impossibilities into realities. We’re excited by the possibility of a unified national body, but one that has devolution and effective public-private collaboration as built-in features. Our railway is the cardiovascular system of Great Britain. Rail reform is a major step towards helping this brittle, fragmented network finally get the blood pumping. It will strengthen the flow of passengers, from remote and suburban areas into cities, and the build financial muscle which will keep it secure for future generations. #rail #transport #infrastructure #WCL
