🚂 Looking for a job that takes you through fields of canola and stunning scenery? Samantha Mclean has found just that as one of only four female long-distance regional train drivers in NSW. Starting as a station attendant in 2007 with NSW TrainLink, Sam worked her way up to train guard, then a driver on Sydney’s suburban network. At the same time she was also driving heavy defence vehicles and trains in the Army Reserve - before even having a full driver’s license. 🏡 In 2022, Sam embraced a post-COVID tree change, relocating with her family to Junee in regional NSW, home of the driver depot for the Melbourne to Sydney route. Sam’s skills have been put to great use with the recent surge in XPT patronage. Nearly 295,000 customers travelled on the Sydney to Melbourne route in 2023/2024—a 26% increase from the previous year. Making NSW a better place to live, work and visit.
About us
We’re a New South Wales government organisation leading the group of transport agencies and divisions that keep NSW moving. With over 25,000 people working right across NSW, we drive the continual development of safe, integrated and efficient transport systems such as road, rail and maritime networks. We’re committed to delivering better transport for the future of NSW, shaping our cities, centres and communities for generations to come. Right now, we’re delivering an ambitious and once-in-a-generation $72.2 billion program of public infrastructure works – the largest transport infrastructure program in Australia’s history. That means more job opportunities than ever before in metropolitan and regional areas right across the state – and your chance to make a lasting impact that will benefit generations to come. If you think Transport for NSW is home only to engineers, tradies and mechanics, think again. We've got roles you may not expect to see at Transport – from drone operators to graphic designers, Crash Lab technicians to boating safety officers, bridge engineers to demand planners, and all kinds of experts in between. In an organisation that’s as large, diverse and dynamic as Transport for NSW, there are thousands of opportunities. But it’s not just about what we do – it’s the way that we do it. We’re taking a new approach to the way we work. We’re embracing new technology and new ways of working. We’re building an open work culture where our people from a diverse range of backgrounds can thrive and continue to innovate. The road ahead is full of possibility and there’s plenty of work to do. We need great people to help us get it done.

Transport for NSW has a big role to safely design for the needs of all users of roads and streets – from civic spaces, cycleways, bus and light rail routes to freight. Did you know that Transport for NSW has more than 700 Road Designers, 120 Urban Designers, 500 Transport Planners, 110 Traffic Engineers and 200 Road Safety professionals? These people work with hundreds of Council staff across the state to design and operate thousands of kilometres of roads, streets and civic spaces every day. Transport for NSW has just published a new Design of Roads and Streets manual. The manual uses design solutions to enhance road safety and improve vibrancy. These solutions include ensuring our rubbish can be collected and our packages delivered, our buses don’t get stuck and increasing tree canopy, so people walking, cycling, or enjoying community spaces, are comfortable. In October 1933, we saw the state’s FIRST traffic lights installed on the intersection of Market and Kent streets in Sydney 🚦 While most took to them quickly, a number of men realised that now the lights were there, the usual policemen who directed traffic weren't there anymore, so they took the opportunity to be the first people to run a red light in NSW 🤦♀️ 📸 Pictures and information found via The State Library of New South Wales. #FlashbackFriday #History #Transport #TransportForNSW

🗺️📍⚠️ A high-tech geo-mapping tool and emergency hub is being used to assist NSW Government responses to emergencies like bush fires, floods, earthquakes, utility failures, cyber-attacks, and major incidents. Developed by Transport for NSW the geospatial tool combines around 200 live and 300 static data layers to provide an instant snapshot of the scale of an incident, in real time. The TransportOne dashboard pinpoints impacted assets, such as traffic lights, bridges, and hospitals, while tracking crew locations. 📈 The tool also helps to predict and plan for future impacts on transport infrastructure by modelling the forecasts and warnings of partner agencies such as the Bureau of Meteorology, NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), and NSW State Emergency Service (SES) onto the map. 👮🧑🚒👷♂️ The dashboard covers the whole of the state and can be instantly shared with internal Transport teams, combat agencies including the RFS, NSW Police, and SES. This shared, real-time view helps allocate resources efficiently, guiding decisions on support services and restoring transport links faster. #GeomappingTool #Technology #Collaboration #EmergencyResponse #TransportForNSW

October is Motorcycle Awareness Month, supported by the Motorcycle Council of NSW and Transport for NSW since 2012. 🏍️ Riders account for nearly 9% of road fatalities and over 4,000 injuries from 2019 to 2022, despite being only 4% of registered vehicles. Each year, an average of 57 riders die and 946 are injured, highlighting the need for shared road safety responsibility. Did you know that riders who wear protective gear are up to twice as likely to avoid being hospitalised after a crash? Programs like MotoCAP and CRASH help assess motorcycle gear for safety and comfort, providing price guides to assist riders in choosing suitable equipment. Check out resources for riders, including tips for cornering, lane filtering, choosing safe gear, and road rules: https://lnkd.in/g9DBBzHT #RoadSafety #MotorcycleAwarenessMonth #TransportForNSW

Did you know more than $143 million is currently sitting on nearly 18 million Opal cards which haven’t been used in over a year? Over 60 per cent of public transport users on adult fares now use credit and debit cards or phones, and the dormant dollars left on Opal cards have more than doubled in the last five years. Whether you’ve switched to contactless payment or left your Opal card at the back of a drawer, it’s time to ‘tap in’ to those hard-earned dollars trapped on unused Opals and put them to good use. Using the Transport for NSW Opal app, users can check details online, block old or lost cards, and transfer funds to a new card. You can simply roll the balance onto a new card, use it up from your old account or request a refund from Transport. About 80 per cent of the Opal cards are unregistered, but customers with unregistered cards can still claim a refund. Commuters without a registered card will need to fill out an online form through Transport for NSW and provide an Australian bank account for the money to go into. Apply for an Opal card refund here: https://lnkd.in/ggC5A9nP

A Northern Tablelands family who was struggling to get their child with a disability to school on the bus is breathing a sigh of relief after a unique accessible transport solution was found. 🚌 The Andrew family lives around 40 minutes from Ben Lomond Public School, and it wasn’t easy to get 7-year-old Elijah (Eli) to school. Eli couldn’t catch the school bus without extra support, so his mum, Emma Andrew, had to drive him to school every day. Transport for NSW partnered with the NSW Department of Education. Glen Innes Bus Services, and the Andrew family to devise a unique solution: installing a five-point harness child seat on the bus and providing a carer to accompany Eli on journeys. Together, we've created a simple but innovative solution that gives Eli a chance to ride the bus like the other students and access a richer educational experience. #Accessibility #Safety #RegionalNSW #TransportForNSW

♻️ 🚴♀️ RICHMOND VALLEY COUNCIL has saved $2.4 million by recycling over 8,000 cubic metres of landslip debris from Naughtons Gap Road, near Casino, making the new Northern Rivers Rail Trail Casino to Bentley section safer for cyclists. Instead of facing landfill disposal costs of $3.2 million, the council worked with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to repurpose the debris, reducing steepness on the new rail trail and improving safety. The road has been closed since March 2021 due to the level of flood damage and landslips, but with the $15.8 million Betterment of Naughtons Gap Road project underway, is scheduled to reopen by the end of 2024. #TransportforNSW #Sustainability #RegionalNSW #Collaboration
