There are good secrets and bad secrets. A good secret might be the surprise birthday party of a friend. A bad secret is when a sexual predator asks a child to be silent about what they have done. To protect your children, talk to them about the different kinds of secrets that exist. Let your child know that some secrets can cause pain and that it is always okay to tell them, even when someone threatens you and tells you to be quiet. #Abreezeofhope #prevention #NoMoreSexualViolence

This alarming discovery underscores the critical importance of digital vigilance and online safety in our interconnected world. The work that we do is vital in educating children and young people about online exploitation, grooming and sextortion. As we celebrate Children's Day, it's essential to address a growing concern that puts our children's safety and well-being at risk - sextortion. #Sextortion is a form of #blackmail where perpetrators coerce victims, often children and teens, into providing sexual content or engaging in sexual acts in exchange for preventing the release of compromising images or videos. In today's digital age, children are increasingly vulnerable to such exploitation. Predators may befriend young victims #online, manipulate them into sharing intimate content, and then threaten to publish or distribute those materials unless the victim complies with their demands. This can have devastating consequences, leading to emotional trauma, depression, and even self-harm. As parents, we must be #vigilant and #educate ourselves and our children about the dangers of sextortion. Encourage open communication, teach kids about online safety, and monitor their digital activities. Additionally, seek immediate help from law enforcement if you suspect your child is a victim of sextortion. By raising #awareness and taking proactive measures, we can empower children to navigate the digital landscape safely and celebrate Children's Day with the joy and protection they deserve. Together, we can create a world where our children can thrive, free from the threats of sextortion and other forms of exploitation. #ChildrensDay #Sextortion #OnlineSafety #ParentingTips #DigitalWellbeing #CyberPluralMSSP

Today is Human Trafficking Awareness Day. HT is rampant in Durham Region, and it doesn’t look like what you might imagine…. and that keeps young people, parents and trusted adults blind to the signs, and vulnerable to the risks. Parents need to know - it not the “stranger predator” the media teaches us to fear…. It is the new boyfriend or the new best friend who is incredibly generous with attention and gifts….. Some things to know: - the average age of recruitment into the sex trade in Durham Region is just 13 years old! - 92% of victims knew their trafficker beforehand. - victims often are living at home with unsuspecting parents, and going to school, trapped by a trauma-bond, coercion and financial manipulation and abuse, and fear. EDUCATE YOURSELF about the warning signs to watch for, and the resources available to help at stopht.com. If you - or someone you know - needs help, call 1-833-900-1010. Please share and help us raise awareness! #STOPHT All reactions: 3 Sadie Garry Filoon, Tannaz Fadaee and 1 other

📌 Globally, more children and young people than ever are using the internet. While increased internet access and usage can bring benefits, it also exposes children to a wide range of risks, including sexual exploitation and abuse. 📌 Children from minority or marginalised groups are even more at risk. ✅ Including children’s perspectives when designing policies about their safety helps ensure that interventions and services are responsive to their experiences, rights and needs.
