Aerospace-X flies at full speed ✈ The first on-site workshop of the Aerospace-X research project after the kick-off took place in Berlin this week. The entire team had two exciting days full of brainstorming and conceptual work. It was an important meeting, also in order to clearly define the next steps in the end-to-end quality management work package, which is coordinated by gemineers. Many thanks to Airbus for the great organization, including some fun icebreaker games! Bringing the team together like no other! Also many thanks to the Fraunhofer IPK for hosting the event and to all participants. Looking forward to the next working session! The goal of Aerospace-X is to enhance the competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability of supply chains in the German, European, and, ultimately, the global aviation industry, based on an open and collaborative data ecosystem. The consortium, under the coordination of Airbus, comprises high-class OEM and Tier-n manufacturing companies, digital solution providers, and research institutions from the aerospace sector. The research initiative funded by the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz has an overall budget of more than 50 million euros and a duration of over two years. #aerospace #gemineers #dataspaces #digitaltwin

🎯 Resilience, competitiveness and sustainability - our goals for the aerospace industry within the BMWK-funded Aerospace-X project. This week, together with more than 30 partners from the aviation industry and research, we took part in the kick-off of the Aerospace-X project led by Airbus, one of the largest projects within the Manufacturing-X research program. Under the motto "Manufacturing-X ... Make Data Work", we will be developing an open, collaborative data ecosystem that will serve as the basis for the scalable use of manufacturing data in the aviation industry. Our main task is the participation within the "End-to-End Quality Management" work package, which is under the direction of our spin-off gemineers GmbH. In this work package, the digital twin will form the basis for data-based quality management, which plays a particularly important role in the manufacture and operation of safety-critical engine and structural components. 💪 With our project results, we want to make a contribution to more sustainable and resilient supply chains for the aerospace industry - a goal that is even more of a concern to us in times of global crises such as geopolitical instability, pandemics and cyber security risks. In other work packages of the Aerospace-X project, we aim to provide solutions for capacity management, reducing the carbon footprint of products and for the circular economy. In addition to a total of four collaborating Fraunhofer Institutes, numerous German and European engine OEMs and Tier-n suppliers are also involved, with whom we have been working together on a trustful basis for many years. Other partners include providers of digital solutions and research institutions from the aerospace industry. For the kick-off, we were welcomed by the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz and VDI Technologiezentrum GmbH at the ZAL Center of Applied Aeronautical Research in Hamburg. ✈️ We are very much looking forward to working together on this exciting and future-relevant research field! Highlights from ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace 1. Prominent Presence of In-Space Manufacturing Companies Noteworthy is the significant presence of companies focused on in-space manufacturing. Key players include The Exploration Company, Voyager Space, Redwire Space Europe, and Airbus. The pioneering mission by Varda Space Industries seems to have inspired many in the industry, though I remain skeptical about the market size. Bioprinting, in particular, holds promise, yet a commercially viable product appears to be at least a decade away. It is evident that both Europe and the US are recognizing low Earth orbit as a commercial frontier, while space agencies are shifting their focus toward deep space exploration. 2. Funding Shifts and Security Discourse I liked how one of the speakers said with regret that there will be less money for exploration projects in the future, because in the foreseeable future more money will be spent on war. This shift towards security and technological sovereignty was palpable. The European Union is acutely aware of the strategic importance of space for Europe's future security. The current situation mirrors post-Yugoslav war developments when Europe established its own GNSS. Today, similar efforts are underway with IRIS², despite the realistic expectations that the system will not be operational by 2027 and will likely exceed initial cost estimates. Plus the results of European Parliament elections will likely affect EU’s approach to space programs. 3. Emphasis on Long-Term Space Sustainability A key event was the signing of the ESA Zero Debris Charter by over forty organizations, underscoring a commitment to sustainable space activities. However, the document itself does not contain the clause of deorbiting of space object within five years, which is already a commitment for European Space Agency - ESA missions. This requirement currently applies mainly when companies seek an FCC license, effectively making the five-year rule a standard since 2022. The Zero Debris Charter remains non-binding, but it reflects a collective aspiration towards a future free from space debris. 4. Support for Light Launch Vehicles Europe is poised to support the development of light launch vehicles, with anticipated, albeit modest, returns of European launch capabilities this summer with Ariane 6 and LV from Isar Aerospace. This initiative reflects an institutional push aiming to ensure Europe’s assured access to space, however commercial prospects of these LVs remain unclear to me. 5. Local Focus of ILA Berlin ILA Berlin retains a local flavor, with a limited presence of international space companies. I had anticipated greater participation from French, Italian, and British firms, as well as leading New Space companies from Lithuania (Kongsberg NanoAvionics) and Belgium (Aerospacelab). Nevertheless, it was a pleasure to meet the colleagues from the Berlin office of EnduroSat.
ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace has begun! Come to booth 411 in Hall 4 to meet our team and catch a glimpse of our groundbreaking SmartSat. This is your chance for an up-close and personal look at how we're preparing for the future of satellite manufacturing, and to chat with Walter Ballheimer, Dennis Moore, Christian Williges, Pavel Solenov, Ivan Kosenkov, Sam Bender, and David Korczak. #NextSpace #SmallSatellites #ILABerlin2024

Large launch vehicles could end up having a big effect on the small launch vehicle market through low prices and encouraging customers to build larger satellites. As more launch providers embrace reusability as part of its system design, others choose to focus more on low cost manufacturing and high launch frequency. Join Monica Jan (Infinio Capital), Keiko Nasu (Isar Aerospace), Michael CALLARI (MaiaSpace) and Richard French (Rocket Lab) as they discuss : - Is there still room for the small/medium launch segment? - What is the winning business model to capture market share for the new entrants? We are happy to announce that we are now part of the Aerospace-X project! Aerospace-X is a collaboration between 30 companies, associations and research institutes, in which Airbus Operations GmbH is taking the lead. The "Aerospace-X" consortium intends to establish an open, collaborative data network for the global aviation industry. This will transform the currently not consistently digital supply chain landscape into a new end-to-end ecosystem with partners and to enable a new form of collaborative value creation to: 🔹 Boost the resilience and speed/ability of adaptation, 🔹 Increase the sustainability and conformity with regulations, 🔹 Improve the transparency to optimize processes and data-based decision-making, 🔹 Increase the efficiency through preventive E2E quality management, 🔹 Create the foundation for a collaborative, data-based value creation. We are proud to be participating as a partner in this project, which has special attention to sustainability, by focusing on our existing carbon footprint and our approach towards lifecycle analysis. #AerospaceX #DataNetwork #Aviation #Sustainability Montana Aerospace
