Much to admire about the rise of #BrentfordFC into the #PremierLeague but the latest set of financial results suggest that the club may be following the long-established pattern for promoted clubs whereby the achievement of economic profit ebbs away in the second season and beyond as the cost of 'competitiveness' and maintaining PL status become increasingly burdensome. The club has commendably achieved two successive economic profits which is a very rare feat indeed with Premier League clubs. With one in three of the promoted trio of clubs usually relegated in the first PL season, the club has done well to weather the transformation to the senior division. The challenge is to stay there without hitting the panic button and falling into the trap of attempting to preserve PL status at all (and usually destructive) cost.

Multi-club ownership percentage is growing not only in Europe. Most of the audience know City Football Group (dozen of clubs including Man City, Palermo, Troyes, Girona, New York City) and Red Bull football conglomerate owning clubs from Leipzig, Salzburg, New York and Brazil. But there are many more - and sometimes you get surprised with the level of clubs they invested. Here you see infographics showing the biggest percentage of multi-club ownership in Belgium and I remembered a story connected with it. In 2015 we were visiting Belgium to establish connection with best academies and offer some talents from Eastern Europe. But it ended up with several meetings with clubs owners and management who were interested to sell the clubs to international investors. Half of the teams were already owned by foreigners. The market was on fire - during one week we were hearing about five clubs on sale with one closed the deal by the end of our stay there. The options were different for any budget and concept of further development. Such a great interest was explained by the level of the league, softer restrictions for number of non-EU players and geography – Belgium is quite small and located in the heart of Europe which allows the scouts to come for a weekend and visit several matches. The interest in investing was and is still coming from around the world - funds from US and Europe, Arab, Asian and even African businessmen. Unfortunately, our connections were not ready to invest that moment so they regreted about it after 2 years as the prices had increased significantly. If we compare the prices from 2015 and today the difference reach 100+ percent. There are not many other areas you can gain such profit. So we should not be suprised that international money are heavily invested in European clubs sometimes even by people who has no idea about football - “nothing personal, it’s just business”. #ClubOwnership #MultiClubOwnership #EuropeanFootball #FootballBusiness

It begs the question, what are the pro clubs in the SPL doing to develop Scottish players?. Look at the number of Scots in the 1st team squads last season. I know the 2002 year group well (22 years old this year). I know of 4 players who are playing F/T football at a “high” level. Josh Doig, Aaron Hickey, Connor Barron and Adam Montgomery. 7 SFA Development schools, around 90 “elite” young players. 20+ Pro academies. From under 13 to under 17, they’ve probably gone through 500 young players but produced only 4. It’s scandalous frankly!!! Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia (a country smaller than Scotland in terms of population) have a world class academy with world class players as graduates. Luka Modric is just one of many. We have a small pool of talent but are wasteful. Question. Should player development be in the hands of the pro clubs? Its a genuine question!
