'Rethinking education in the context of climate change' - Scientific evidence shows that our planet is approaching several environmental and climate tipping points faster than previously expected. This means that the international community is facing a rapidly closing window of opportunity to achieve profound transformations across sectors, systems and mindsets to secure a sustainable and liveable future. What is the role of education system in enabling social change at the massive scale and pace needed for climate change mitigation? https://lnkd.in/eZJpYMEk #ClimateAction #EducationForChange #Sustainability #OECD #OECDEducationWorkingPapers

What education can help achieve climate goals? "It is an almost universally accepted assumption that the more educated individuals and societies are, the better. However, a new report is challenging conventional wisdom and asking serious questions about how children are taught around the world." "#Climatechange and #education are highly interlinked. For example, climate change affects the delivery and quality of education around the world – as climate related weather events such as fires and flooding disrupt educational provision. Since climate change impacts are greater on marginalized groups, this particularly has implications for some communities, including many in the Global South. "Education is also essential for mitigating and adapting to climate change. It is vital for empowering children, youth and adults to mobilize their communities in moving away from fossil fuels and towards addressing inequities related to climate change... "...More education, of the right kind, is crucial to engender the social and political will and capacity to address the climate crisis with the urgency and skills required." Climate education remains a tool that connects the reality and our commited efforts towards building a sustainable planet. Our impacts remains a shot term solution if it's not noted down in the classrooms. If the younger generation does not learn about the importance of the seeds we plant in the street. When we fail to tell them the reason why we ask them to cut their emissions, passing these knowledge and information is the most powerful tool to transfer our solutions and our efforts. If we fail to highlight the need for a collective efforts that will encourage and propel consistency then our efforts is limited to just an immediate solution. I want ask us to join hands and make climate education a priority in our learning institutions, this is the only way our efforts and solutions can be transferred which is known as continuous solution. Here’s the paradox: while higher education levels are crucial for economic growth, they also lead to higher income, consumption, and ultimately, more greenhouse gas emissions per capita. 🔴 In fact, rapid increases in educational attainment and the resulting economic activity could cause emissions to rise by 5-25% by 2100, depending on the region. This calls into question the current focus of education systems, which often prioritize individual success over collective responsibility. We need a fundamental shift toward teaching how to live responsibly and sustainably! 🌍 To truly #LearnForOurPlanet, climate education must take a holistic approach, equipping learners with the knowledge and values to address the climate crisis. ➡️ See more in the report by #GEMReport UNESCO and Sustainability and Education Policy Network #MECCE Project: https://bit.ly/ccec2024 #GreeningEducation

The discourse on climate education in India is nascent. What must the objectives of a climate curriculum across the ages look like? What pedagogies might mitigate doomerism and encourage climate action? How can climate education encourage a systemic view of the climate crisis? These are important questions for school education departments if they are to prepare educators to learn, build curricula and teach about climate change. However, the momentum to build curricula comes from society. To this end, the Climate & Education programme at Asar and the Climate Educators Network, commissioned a perception survey among first time voters, in 4 states, to understand what young people feel and think about their preparedness for climate change. Their responses have significant implications and provide clear direction for policy around curriculum.
