Informing education action since 2002.

À propos

Achieving the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4) on education requires sound evidence and analysis to support policy-making, facilitate the sharing of good practice, and hold those responsible to account for fulfilling their commitments. The Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM Report) is the global public good that serves this purpose. Established in 2002, the GEM Report is an editorially independent report, hosted and published by UNESCO. At the 2015 World Education Forum, it received a mandate from 160 governments to monitor and report on: - Progress on education in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular reference to the SDG 4 monitoring framework - The implementation of national and international strategies to help hold all relevant partners to account for their commitments, as part of the overall SDG follow-up and review process. The annual GEM Report is based on multiple sources of data, which enables it to provide a macro view of education issues. Through multiple communication channels, it reaches all regions of the world. It serves as a foundation for evidence-based advocacy to promote progress towards SDG 4, including by convening dialogue on education issues among key decision makers that can effect policy change. The GEM Report’s vision is to serve as the main resource for decision makers who seek comparative research and knowledge to inform their actions on inclusive and equitable quality education at national, regional and global levels. Its mission is to synthesise, analyse and clearly present the best available data, evidence and research to explain progress and differences in education, and to make recommendations that stimulate reflection and dialogue and thereby improve policymaking.

📢 Young people of the world, use your voices to transform climate education! Sign the petition by #GEMReport and #MECCE Project and let your government know that #GreeningEducation should be about action, not just facts. As we approach the UN Summit of the Future and #COP29, we are calling on governments to prioritize climate change education. It must relate to our daily lives and local communities, with a stronger emphasis on social-emotional learning, action-oriented strategies, and environmental justice. 🔴 Join us in urging education leaders to: - Embed sustainability, biodiversity, and climate change education into all subjects. - Shift from teaching about climate change to teaching how to act and adapt. - Integrate education with broader climate action. - Regularly monitor and report on green content in curricula. - Engage youth in designing and delivering climate education that meets the needs of 21st-century learners. It’s #GoodNewsSunday! ☀️ 🇨🇳 In 2004, #China launched an initiative to close the educational gap between urban and rural students, reaching over 100 million rural children. The reform equipped schools with critical technology — DVD players, satellite sets, and computer rooms — connecting students to the nation’s best teachers. Top urban educators recorded lectures and interactive materials, which were integrated into daily lessons with the help of local teachers. This effort led to remarkable results: a 32% improvement in Chinese and math skills. Long-term impact? Graduates landed more jobs focused on cognitive skills instead of manual skills, shrinking urban-rural education gaps by 18% and earning gaps by 38%! ℹ️ Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Aj4NaR Stay tuned for more uplifting #education news from around the world. 📚✨ #2023GEMReport #TechOnOurTerms

In this video, we catch up with Rougui, one of our Spotlight Children, a year after we began documenting her education journey in #Senegal 🇸🇳. Now in grade 3, Rougui is excited about learning new subjects and thriving in her studies. We are following the progress of four children across #Africa to showcase their passion for learning — and to highlight the potential we risk losing if we don’t invest in their education. Every child is #BornToLearn, yet so many never get the chance. Follow Rougui’s journey ➡️ https://bit.ly/4dPdM1B #SpotlightSaturday

Bilingual education policies offer hope, but language barriers still hinder many African children: only 20% of them learn in their home language, compared to 70% in other regions. This and other challenges were discussed at the Inaugural East African Community Regional Conference on Education, taking place on 12-15 August in Arusha, #Tanzania. During the Panel Discussion on Confronting the Language Question, GEM Report Director Manos Antoninis presented findings from the 2024 Spotlight Report "Learning Counts" by #GEMReport, Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) and African Union. ➡️ Explore more: https://lnkd.in/e7vEQyNy #BorntoLearn

In #Chad 🇹🇩, where student dropout rates are alarmingly high, an innovative education initiative is making a difference. The 2017/18 rollout of the Basic Education Quality Improvement and Local Management Promotion project, led by Chad’s Ministry of National Education and Civic Promotion, marked a significant shift in the way remedial education was delivered. Instead of simply adding more hours to an already overburdened system, the project focused on enhancing the quality of instruction during regular school hours, integrating tailored remedial support for students who were struggling. 👩🏫 Key to this initiative's success was its focus on empowering teachers. They were trained to observe students' unique learning patterns, meet their mistakes with support and guidance rather than punishment, and adapt their teaching methods to engage students actively. Teachers also received comprehensive guides and training kits, equipping them with new strategies to better cater to varying student needs. This shift from traditional, passive classrooms to a more nurturing environment helped rebuild students' confidence and motivation. As a result, by 2022/23, almost all participating teachers had adopted these new methods, leading to a notable reduction in grade repetition rates. Chad's approach offers valuable lessons for other countries facing similar challenges. By focusing on teacher capacity and creating a supportive learning environment, they can pave the way for more students to stay in school and succeed. ➡️ See more in the #WorldEducationBlog by Jean-Louis Ripoche: https://bit.ly/3Mow4LP #BorntoLearn

Today, on International #YouthDay, we celebrate the vital role of young people in driving climate change education and action. 95% of youth are deeply concerned about climate change, yet many feel unprepared by their education to confront these challenges. Formal education systems often miss the political aspects of #ClimateChange, leading young people to take action themselves. Through climate strikes and activism, they are filling the gaps left by traditional education. Movements like Fridays For Future International, led by Greta Thunberg, have amplified youth voices worldwide, turning students into climate educators who teach their communities — and even their teachers — about impactful actions. Youth are also exposing systemic flaws, such as outdated school textbooks that prioritize low-impact actions like recycling while neglecting more significant changes like living car-free. As youth-led initiatives continue to focus on advocacy, communication, literacy, and leadership, they are reshaping the narrative around climate change. They demand a more action-oriented, justice-focused climate education that equips the next generations to face the challenges ahead. ➡️ Explore more on how youth are leading the way in #GreeningEducation in the publication by #GEMReport UNESCO and the Sustainability and Education Policy Network #MECCE Project: https://bit.ly/ccec2024 #LearnForOurPlanet
