What Is DFARS and What Does it Mean to Be Compliant? What about "Model Based Definition" and do I really need it? Every Industry has their own language--I remember 11 years ago someone mentioning CNC machines, or additive manufacturing--certifications like AS9100 or ITAR--then we have technology terms like IOT and Manufacturing 4.0-- as a new person in this industry, had no idea what that meant So the Government and the Department of Defense has their own language and I wanted to talk about DFARS-- Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement. These regulations are put in place to protect our secrets and our Intellectual Property Anyone doing contract work for the DoD and other federal agencies is required to be DFARS-compliant. Whether you belong to one of the larger defense contractors or a smaller organization, becoming DFARS-compliant is a must. Even if you don't currently engage in any work for the DoD, you can take advantage of future opportunities by becoming DFARS-compliant. There are a lot of moving parts in DFARS but in all new DOD contracts, there is a clause requiring companies to be "Model Base Definition Ready" in order to be paid and do work on New Programs. Pratt & Whitney is training their engineers and letting their suppliers know they have to get this training. So I know there is a lot of Groaning going on... another requirement...... BUT HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) was selected by the Department of Defense to build a "Digital Thread Lab" to teach Model Based definition. The courses are deeply subsidized and they are taught by some of the smartest engineers in the world.
