The B-21 Raider, the recently unveiled Northrop Grumman aircraft, highlights the changes coming to the aviation industry over the next 20 years, which is good for the environment! The tail-less plane, the flying wing or blended wing, shows aviation is moving away from the old, tube and wing model. The new designs are thought to have fuel efficiency savings of between 20 - 50%. Where to next? Ramjets and Scramjets, like the Lockheed Martin SR-72. Imagine the above fuel savings with hyper velocity (mach 5 i.e. 6,174km per hour). Flight times between Melbourne and Los Angeles, under 3 hours. When? Not soon. The military are yet to have active units using this technology, but they are in the wings.

Some of the most recent and relevant news about #militaryaviation: 🔥 Aurora Flight Sciences (a subsidiary of Boeing) has offered a new look at an experimental high-speed, runway-independent, vertical takeoff and landing-capable aircraft under development for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The design features an array of dedicated lift fans to increase operational flexibility. The high lift, low drag fan-in-wing (FIW) demonstrator aircraft would integrate a blended wing body platform with vertical flight capabilities, something never seen before. 🔥 Last week we learnt that GE is shifting the focus of its adaptive cycle engine from the #F35 to the Next Generation Adaptive Propulsion (#NGAP) program to equip the future US sixth-gen fighter jet. This week, Pratt & Whitney disclosed that a digital Preliminary Design Review (PDR) has already been completed. 🔥 Speaking again of the Next Generation Air Dominance (#NGAD) program, Lockheed Martin has released a video for the 80th anniversary of #SkunkWorks. In this video, the company has shown a sketch of sixth-gen fighter jet, but also some references to the #SR72 reconnaissance aircraft and a previously unseen stealth flying wing drone. #military #aviation

Here’s a recap of the other relevant news for military aviation: 🔥 Japan, Britain and Italy are progressing the work on the future Global Combat Air Program (#GCAP), participated by BAE Systems, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Leonardo (among others). The partners are close to completing the aircraft’s conceptual design phase, which will allow to move to the next stage of the program next year — the design and development phase. The stage should last 5 years and lead to a maiden flight around 2030, while export and deployment should be ready by 2035. 🔥 According to OCCAR, the first activities to certify the engine of the RPAS #Eurodrone have started. The Catalyst engine was developed in the last decade across Europe and will be provided by Avio Aero, which should deliver 120 engines for 60 aircraft. The manufacturing of the aircraft will be carried out by Leonardo and Dassault Aviation. 🔥 In the next few weeks, JetZero will begin flight tests of a subscale version of its full-scale blended wing body (BWB) multirole commercial and military demonstrator. The company was funded under a 2021 contract by NASA and by U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) in 2023. Flight tests of the full-scale demonstrator are expected for 2027, powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines. 🔥 The US Army has cancelled its next generation Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (#FARA) program. The decision comes two decades to the month after the Army ended its plans to procure the RAH-66 Comanche and nearly 16 years after it terminated work on the ARH-70A Arapaho, both aircraft designed to replace the Kiowa, the same helicopter FARA was meant to replace.
