June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The World Health Organization describes elder abuse as “an intentional act, or failure to act, by a caregiver or another person in a relationship involving an expectation of trust that causes harm to an adult 60 years and older”. According to the Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council (AEAAC), 1 in 10 older adults living in the province experience abuse within the last 5 years, often by a trusted adult. It’s a concerning statistics that underscores the importance of vigilance and support for our elder community. At GBC, we believe that one abused elder adult is too many and hence why we take this issue very seriously. Financial abuse was the second most reported form of abuse. Our commitment to serving seniors goes beyond financial transactions; it’s about safeguarding their financial well-being. Together, let’s ensure our seniors and their families are supported and protected. Join us in this mission to #BuildABank that cares deeply about our elders. This Saturday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). This is a day dedicated to highlighting the often overlooked issue of elder abuse, putting a spotlight on the prevalence mental and physical abuse, mistreatment and neglect of older people in our communities. Studies from Seniors Rights Victoria show that 14.8% of Australians aged 65 years and over had experienced at least one recognised form of elder abuse over the previous 12 months. This suggests that 160,000 older Victorians are experiencing elder abuse each year to a level they are willing to identify to researchers. This is horrific and far too prevalent. As outlined in the United Nations Principles for Older People, “Older persons should be able to live in dignity and security and be free of exploitation and physical or mental abuse.” Heartland Bank helps Australians release their home equity to provide financial security in retirement, and we have extensive processes in place to detect and reduce the risk of financial elder abuse. Empowering Change through Culturally-competent Life & Leadership Coaching | Afrikan-centred Author & Educator | Advocate for Social Justice | Community Development Specialist
📅 On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, I am reminded of our duty of care to protect our elders from abuse and neglect. With the elder population projected to grow by 38% by 2030, especially in developing countries, the need for a global and direct response is urgent. (TW) Statistics show that: 1️⃣ 1 in 6 older adults has experienced abuse (Age UK, 2021). 2️⃣ Financial abuse affects 130,000 older people annually (Action on Elder Abuse, 2020). 3️⃣ Only 4% of elder abuse cases are reported (Hourglass, 2021). Elder abuse remains underreported globally, demanding approaches that consider cultural contexts and specific risk factors. In fact, organisations play a crucial role in safeguarding the elderly by promoting Cultural competence and implementing robust protection policies. Encourage your teams to be vigilant and supportive. For guidance and training on elder care, visit 🔗 sisdr.com. #ElderAbuse #HumanRights #Culture #SocialJustice #CulturalCompetence #EmployeeSupport
